URGENT HELP PLEASE !!!!!!

Hi everyone. I need urgent help.
I was out in my 2.0L ultima today when the car just cut out altogether.
Now there is no electrics whatsoever for no reason.
No, lights, no instruments, no radio, no PATS, no central locking, nothing at all.
So the car is broken down at the roadside..
I managed to check all the fuses (all okay), fuse boxes are bone dry etc. The battery voltage shows 12.57v with ignition on or off.
I've taken the negative lead off the battery for approx 1 hour to try and re-set the electrics.
Any idea's how I can at least fire the car up so I get get it back on my drive?

The fact that the fuseboxes appear dry doesn't mean they are dry you need to take them apart to be sure.
I bet fuseboxes need rebuilding or the loom is shot...
Did it cut out while driving or died after switching off? One of the relays may be shot... but that's unlikely as it wouldn't die altogether. Fuseboxes and the loom are your best bet.

Hi, it actually cut out while driving.
I can't really repair the fuse boxes at the roadside, I need to get it on my drive to work on it.

Simmo but the battery seems fine and there is no life in it at all so the alternator doesn't fit as a theory... One way or another it's fuseboxes, looms related problem...

Mate had a similar problem with his BMW. Just packed up.First sign was wipers and other electrics failing one by one 'till car stopped. Recovery man came along wacked the alternator with a BIG hammer,clearly jarred the brushes back into contact, started and we drove it home !!. Desparate situation try desparate measures!!.

It's no good, the car is still completely dead no matter what I try and do.
I can't move it until the electrics are sorted.
I don't even know where to start if it might be the wiring loom. the car has been very reliable until today.
It doesn't seem possible to get the fuseboxes out while at the roadside.
So I'm really stuck.
Any ideas how to proceed ? as I'm desperate.

You can get the fuseboxes out while on the roadside and the wiring loom... But i can't see the point of it. Rebuilding both fuseboxes if you're a novice will take you probably 2 days, engine wiring loom will take you in that case at least a week and 100m of new wires. [more then 200m if it was a cossie] + there are 2 other main looms.
You need to tow the car home anyway and then we can think about advising you further...

Have you checked all the fuses ?
I had a fuse go in the main fusebox that controled the ignition switch i forget what number it was ? but with that fuse blown it was dead .

swap relays 18 and 21 in the battery side fusebox and try it.

Ignition relay may have failed, we've seen it three times in the last couple of months.

Hi, yes I've checked all the fuses in both boxes under the bonnet, all look fine.
I swapped R18 & R21 and all electrics are still dead.
I tried boosting with a fully charged leisure battery using jump leads, still completely dead.
I also tried using one jump lead between battery negative terminal and a good earth on the engine (simulating an earth strap, nothing happened at all. Both battery clamps were tight.
I have a slight thought (don't know why) it may involve a broken starter inhibitor switch (Auto box), BUT, I wouldn't have expected ALL the electrics would blow if that was the case.
Could it be something involving the PATS / imobilizer? but then again the PATS LED is not lit at all.
I had been driving for quite a while before the engine just cut out, along with ALL the electrics.

Its not a PATS problem, must be something around the +ve battery terminal and battery side fusebox, is the main lead ok? not broken internally or melted possibly?
Have a look inside the fusebox, under the actual fuse layer, the bottom pops off with a few clips.
might be water ingress however i would have thought it unusual for everything to go off, is there power coming to the main fuse terminals? (I, II, III and IV)

There is a possibility that the red cable from the battery to the aux fuse box has parted company with the box,you would need to take out the battery access cover in front of the battery,then remove the two bolts at the front of the box to lift it up and have a look,you may need a mirror,alternatively you could first check for conductivity after removing the fuse held down by two screws,and poking a tester through the revealed hole onto the screw inside.

I purchased a 2.3 scorpio on e bay a couple of years ago where nothing electrical worked although it would start and run, I changed the whole fusebox under the driver side cost £45, and everything was OK, I purchased another just in case ! It is a bit fiddly but the whole job took less than one hour.
