What a great forum guys! I am a new owner of 2.0 16V DOCH and with help from this forum im allready started to sort out problems. will look into replacing cat, clean maf, change fuel filter. have changed oil and filter but still have ticking tappety noise which quite worry me, have used full synthetic 5W30 Mobil and added extra oil additive, but still same noise, what should be my next point to look into? and gearbox acting strange - selenoids are sticky, how to sort out this problem any guidence how to do it on my own? help very much appreciated.

Ticking/tapping noise is probably the tappets, which are self adjusting hydraulic. There is always a bit of a tap on the 2.0/2.3 engine & changing the oil to fully synthetic is a good idea. It certainly quitened mine down, but it took a little while before I noticed it. Did you flush the engine when you replaced the oil ? One other thought....is the tapping really loud ? A friend with a 2.3 had a very loud sounding tapping noise a while back & everyone thought it was the tappets, but it turned out to be a loose spark plug causing the noise Welcome to the site

Just a quick note - oil additives are BAD! Don't use them.

few years ago i bought oil additive Tufoil which sorted tappet noise on my BMW, unfortuntely cant find any in UK to buy, so i used one from local halfords, it might been bad idea. I dont know much about all these additives but Tufoil seems good stuf.

today replaced spark plugs (old looked really worn out) and the tappety noise a little bit less but still there, so probably thats how engine is worn out as it had no service history someone prev. owner wasnt looking after car properly as old oil looked black and thin . anyway i have to stop spending money now and see how it goes.

Hi Benza. My old 2.0ltr had quite a loud tappet noise when i first got it. Like yourself i used a good synthetic oil & it made no difference to the noise at all. After 3000 miles the oil was quite black so i changed it again, but used 15w 50 semi synthetic instead. The thicker oil made quite a difference with the tappet noise. It didnt cure it completley, but it sounded a whole lot better. However it is worth noting that the car had done over 190,000 miles (hence me using thicker oil than reccomended)
