24v Parts Availability (Cam Chain Tensioner)
« on: Jul 6th, 2009, 9:20am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Hi everybody.

Have just got myself a 24v Ultima, it's great except for the engine noises.

I think the o/s cam tensioner and oil pump sprocket have failed as the rattle is now dreadful and the oil light comes on under 2500 rpm.

I went to the local Main dealer the other day and phoned a couple of others to be told the tensioner is delisted and now unavailable.

Any ideas where I might get a Tensioner or would it be best to just change the engine?

I really don't want to scrap the car as that would be a waste of a otherwise perfectly good car.

Thanks.

Chris.

Grannypower.
I ordered that very thing last summer from FMD,every time I call in they say"still on back order mate",suppose I will have to tell em it's obsolete  Angry
People on here still have used parts for the BOB,someone may pop up.I have a spare engine but it's still mounted in a Grosvenor limousine.

I'm not sure how the Ford parts system works but is it possible that a Dealer somewhere in the country has one in stock?

And is it possibly not the tensioner that has failed but the chain guides as I believe that some of those are still available?

hi there

it's the chain that stretches and the tensioner can't take up the slack that break the chain guides.

also, if oil light is on at low revs, i'd change the engine rather find other things wrong with your own on strip down.

I took off the Cam cover on the r/h bank and found that the top guide plate between the cams had a groove in it and had been pushed up by the chain slapping it.

Is it then possible that I only need to find the guides and a new timing chain ?

hi there

it's recommended that you replace everything as it's all beded in together.

that's easier said than done though as 1. there's the cost and 2. trying to find the parts.

the parts do come up every now and then on ebay.

Might have to go down that route if I cant find the parts.

Would probably be easier to change engine than fiddle with existing one anyway, I just find it infuriating that I cant drive the thing because of a couple of broken bits of plastic a chain and a cog. Embarassed

Thanks for that GOZZ.

Have sent Rich 1 a PM, hopefully he still has the car as it's not too far from where I am in Woking.

When I ordered the parts for a timing chain job last year I was also told the tensioners were obsolete.

FPUK really struggled to get me the 1008390 tensioner blade - they found one in Germany that they got for me - the blades have all be "delisted" as well now I'm told.

Just had e-mail from FPUK and the oil pump sprocket is no longer available either.

Definitely think it's going to be exchange engine/car time. Cry

Ironically, this tells that the 24V is generally superb quality and cam chain jobs so rare the parts are not worth selling. Knock on wood.

Anyway, I checked with the local Ford here in Finland. Chains and tensioners are available, but the price was 150e for a tensioner. It was not discontinued, but e.g. shocks and road springs were.

I hadn't thought of trying in europe.

My brother lives in Luxembourg so I might see if he can get the bits for me.

I still think that the tensioner might be ok and I might just need the blades, oil pump sprocket and the chain.

Problem being I don't want to strip it apart until I know I can get the bits to put it back together.

In Finland this company does a lot of mail ordering:
www.teroanttilaoy.fi and email varaosat (at) teroanttilaoy.fi

Write him with a list of FINIS (found at the 24V cam chain replacement guide) and see what he says, I'm quite sure he speaks english.

I have taken the cam cover off and the cam sprockets don't look too bad, though I haven't got new ones to compare them with.
