Master Key Mystery!

Evening all,

I bought my Cossie in 1998 as a 2yr old from a Ford main dealer and didn't realise at the time that I should have been supplied with one Master key and two Slave keys. In fact, I was given a Master and ONE Slave. I have used the Slave from Day One with no problems (having locked the Master in Fort Knox!). Recently, I decided that perhaps I should get another Slave key cut and tried using the Master key beforehand (to prove it). This key unlocked the car OK but would not unlock the steering or (obviously), start the car. I examined both keys and, as far as I could tell, the indentations were identical on both Master and Slave - What's going on?

Cheers

Steering lock and slave key have 'worn' together and the master key is still probably 'as new' and so the steering lock now 'sees' it as an imposter and won't turn.

Chances are you open the car on the remote most of the time and so the door locks have not worn at the same rate as the steering lock and the master key is still accepted in the door locks.

You may not be able to see the wear but it doesn't take much.

Probably time for a new steering lock.
You can get rebuild kits or your FMD may be able to build one for your master key and cut new slave keys for you.

or just even your key with a hardcore file, make it more round and it should turn. but rebuilding the lock is a better idea Wink

Keith. The re-build details are [HERE and it is a simple process. So easy I did mine!!  Grin. The MOST IMPORTANT thing is to do the job before the key will not turn. It must turn to position 1 in order to depress the spring which holds the lock in the column. If you can't do that the only way is brute force!!. With the spring depressed the lock simply comes out on the end of the key.  Wink
