Hi I have a Scorpio 2.3 Ghia 16v Auto 1996 (P reg) Ive never had any problems with the emission test before in the mot test as its always gone though easy, in the 7 years Ive had the car. But this time we did not have the money to put it in for MOT and the car stood on a hard stand for 7 months, But when I took it for The MOT it failed on - Exhaust emissions cabon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive [7.3.2b] AND Exhaust emissions Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits [7.3.2b] Fast idle - CO < - 0.30 Actual - 7.67 [%vol} Funny sign 0.97 - 1.03 Actual - 0.792 2nd fast idle- CO <- 0.30 Actual - 2.03 {%vol} Funny sign 0.97 - 1.03 Actual - 0.938 Natural Idle Test - CO <- 0.5 Actual - 2.46 [%vol] As you can see these are very high levels from being ok, the car runs well and dose not smoke. Is there any thing I can do to get these levels down ? what would cause such levels.

When you took it for its test was it really HOT? Its always worth giving the car a good HARD run at top speed in a lowish gear for a few moments to get the cat really hot and clean itself up. Other than that I think its a new cat if that doesn't cure the problem.

Use a bottle of Forte additive in the fuel, it will bring the emissions into line in under half an hour. This is what most MoT centres do and then charge you for some magical work they haven't done.

You can take your chances with Forte (I did it even twice). It probably helped the engine, but I still needed to replace both cats. If you add it, add it to 1/4 full and drive in only low gears (1& 2). But don't have too high hopes with the stuff. A new cat is around 100£+work and a bottle of Forte probably 20.

Hi Thanks I will give Forte a go. Ive also checked all the vaccum pipes and found the one going across the top of the engine split, also checked all the electrical conections and found a few that have a bit of corrosion, from where it had been standing for a while. The thing that gets me the car runs so sweet and never smokes. Ive seen a few different types of forte dose it matter which one ? I used STP injector cleaner for petrol and it worked fine and boosted the MPG dramatically - I'm now seeing as good or better figures than in the book. It cost around £7-50 for four doses, one dose recommended per service to a tankful of petrol. As others have said, give the car a good thrashing before taking it in.
