Rattle on start up

Started my sierra 24v bob to hear one hell of a rattle for a few seconds. Thought it may be the chain tensioner so did a search on here. But is it fixable and what goes wrong. Is it the hydraulic chain tensioner failing or just down to poor oil pressure as it could do with an oil and filter change. Also i have hear a loud click/bang as the engine warms up. I've never been able to pin down where or what that may be. Rob

Sounds like the chain guides may be broken as a result of the tensioner failing. Oilways get blocked and the tensioner doesnt tension the chain, it slaps around and breaks the guides or can even jump on the cogs. You will probably find them lying in the bottom of the sump beside the oil pick up! Can be disastrous if they block it but doesnt happen very often. Only way to really check whats happened is to get in and have a look. Some engines seem to run for long enough with the chain rattle but it a sign something is wrong. Unless you've spent money on that engine the quickest cheapest solution is another engine

| Can the tensioners and guides be changed in situ

Rob. The cracking sound as the Cossie warms up is obviously something expanding, mine does exactly that with no detrimental affect. You can change all the timing gear in situ if you have plenty of time and patience ! If you were a mechanic earning you living doing motor repairs,I doubt that the Cossie owner would be prepared to pay what you would have to charge him GOZZ.

They can go on for ages with a rattle - I wouldn't be swapping it out just Zetec

They can just as likely snap without a rattle. That's what and AA/RAC card is for.

| Or what I have: Car towing service from the insurance. If left on the road, it covers towing expenses + even hotel for up to 5 days depending on how far home it is (otherwise it covers transport home and back to the serviced car etc.). Only "stupid" thing with it is it doesn't cover repair costs. Not sure if this is a standard insurance in UK, quite common in Finland.

| Oil in the tensioners is draining overnight then - takes a couple of seconds for the pressure in them to build back up, hence the rattle while the chain whizzes round untensioned. You can take the tensioners off and give them a good clean - sometimes helps. Only £1.80 for each of the gaskets as well. Quote:Only "stupid" thing with it is it doesn't cover repair costs. | AA/RAC etc don't cover repair costs either - hey are simply "recovery" policies - i.e. they'll try an basic "get you home repair" and if that doesn't work then they'll recover your car/get you home/get you to where your going depending on your level of cover.

I will be interested in the result as mine rattles a bit on startup. I think the problem one is the one under the alternator, I have thought of replacing it.
