2.5TD engine problem

Can anybody help? My beloved Scorpio, a 1998 2.5TD estate has developed an engine problem. It starts first touch and runs ok for about 30 seconds but then the engine seems to lose power and cuts out. It will then start ok, but cut out after 5 seconds. This repeats until the engine is warm through. Meanwhile the rev counter is eratic. Typically, the engine does this either during rain, or shortly after. Otherwise the car runs fine without problems. The rev counter works ok, except when this cutting out phase is occurring. Any ideas? Something to do with the rev counter sensor perhaps? Graham

I have the older 115PS engine with 5-speed manual transmission. Yes, I've just read that link, but I don't think its the same problem. I have no problems starting the car.

Hi, I bet on the CKP sensor (Crankshaft Position Sensor) or the wiring to this sensor. Without him the engine does not start and he's also sends the RPM to the rev counter.

I thought it might be a sensor problem. I'm having this sensor replaced today (Friday). I'll let you (and everybody else) know if this cures the problem or not.

Check the wiring and the connector before replacing the sensor. Might be just a bad electrical connection.

OK. I've had the Crankshaft Position Sensor replaced and this (touch wood) has cured the problem. To recap: Symptoms: Engine (2.5TD) looses power and cuts out. It will restart and then cut out. Does this after or during rain. Incidentally, the Ford CPS is no longer produced, but there is a Bosch equivalent. I paid £73 for it.
