Battery problems sort of sorted

Hi have been following and joining in the saga of discharging batteries.  Having exhausted all the suggestions on here and having to resort to disconnecting the batt every time I stopped it was time for an auto electrician.

He found 1/ Battery was u/s
2/ all circuits thta should switch off on turning off worked
3/ current drain is coming from drivers fuse box fuse 17.

Their trade book lists fuse 17 as module!!
our hand book lists it as electronics.

Fuse box is dry, so what does fuse 17 control? and is it replaceable.

Total cost for 5 hours work and new battery £90 which i am happy with.

well being multiplex wiring fuse 17 covers a few things TIS lists fuse 17 covering

instrument interface control
diagnostics interface
Turbo diesel models engine control
Charging system
Central timing modual (most likely)
Pats
cigarette lighter
clock
Air con with SATC (again likely)

Matt
Thanks for that (I think Cry) did not think it covered so much, what suggestions do you have if any? what would you replace? Need to sort this as with the rain in N Wales it is not fun playing with batteries.

Why timing module? if all is turning off
Why aircon?
Dont doubt you just like to know these things Grin

A OBD scan would tell you if a modual is at fault

i said those 2 as process of elimination

im assuming you have no issues with the instruments, (flicking dials would be from dead battery), lights not working, other lights working when one should be lit, bad earths sort of thing, dials randomly working

Pats, well if this was playing up you could have starting, cutting out probs,

clock draws such little current that i doubt it would drain a battery between starts

yours isnt a diesel Tongue

unless you have the cigarette lighter out then i cant see something shorting it, plus if it was shorted you would smell the wires melting

SATC panels can burn out, if the little lcd screens crack the liquid is corrosive and could eat at the PCB board

central timer, used every day, its essentially a relay with some extra bits, contacts can burn up, not having stripped one i can only assume the timer part is a chip of some kind, perhaps a 555 chipHuh

though thinking about it the charging system could be a culprit, have the alternator (diode fault? )checked,

What i would do it pull the fuse, start (or try to start) the car and see what's not working any more,

other then that, do you have anything like a mobile phone charger fitted to the dash, if that was hard wired in to the cigarette socket wiring, somewhere and become faulty then that would kill it

no problems with instruments, and as you say flickering dials are batt problem, they now gone

Pats, well if this was playing up you could have starting, cutting out probs,

other than flat batt no starting probs, she fires up great
clock draws such little current that i doubt it would drain a battery between starts

yours isnt a diesel Tongue

No 24V cossie
unless you have the cigarette lighter out then i cant see something shorting it, plus if it was shorted you would smell the wires melting

not had probs with ciggy lighter

SATC panels can burn out, if the little lcd screens crack the liquid is corrosive and could eat at the PCB board

again all seems fine there

central timer, used every day, its essentially a relay with some extra bits, contacts can burn up, not having stripped one i can only assume the timer part is a chip of some kind, perhaps a 555 chipHuh

[this is one that sparky thought of, although all systems turn off.
though thinking about it the charging system could be a culprit, have the alternator (diode fault? )checked,

checked when he went through the system yesterday

What i would do it pull the fuse, start (or try to start) the car and see what's not working any more,

will try that if it ever stops raining here

other then that, do you have anything like a mobile phone charger fitted to the dash, if that was hard wired in to the cigarette socket wiring, somewhere and become faulty then that would kill it

Agree Have a proffessionally!! installed hands free but dont seem to have probs with it but might be worth looking at.

Thanks for input, really hope that I can solve this one.

Spoke to sparky and he confirmed that they have carried out the checks on alternator and pulled fuse 17 so it looks as if a swap of the timer module is next
