Any advice much appreciated..

Hi,

It depends on your/his mechanical skills and tools you have. You need to get the gearbox out to change the clutch...
If you're a good and smart DIYer with quality tools it's a pretty straight forward job.

Not too difficult a job - done a few of these myself many years ago for mates - and a good opportunity for yer lad to get his hands dirty  Wink
You should only need basic tools, axle stands, etc...
Suggest you get a copy of the Haynes manual to see what's involved and then decide if you want to give it a go.

The most difficult part is removing the driveshafts, the seals damage easily.   I would as a matter of course be prepared to fit new seals, they are very cheap.   The Fiestas are finnicky with clutches, so I would be thinking about a full clutch kit that includes the thrust bearing, be careful not to loose the silly little grommets that fit on the selector fork that fits between that and the thrust bearing.   They can also wear!   It might be an idea to change the gearbox oil whilst it's out, a much easier job, and more able to empty the whole oil out.   Nice wee car the Fiesta, had a couple of the mk1's, the 1.1 was the best in my opinion.   Good luck with the clutch.
Peter.

I've done these without removing the driveshafts from the gearbox / diff - I know, they can be a pain.
