battery charging

No doubt there is a link for this subject but unable to find one.
I have been laid up for a few weeks now after having knee surgery, 7 weeks in all since I last drove the car.
tried to open the door with the remote no go, so it was a key job.
Tried to start the car and it was just an array of clicking noises.
So now presume the battery is in need of charging.
I did see an article some weeks past on charging a battery, it must not be connected from the negative of the charger to the negative of the battery, is this correct, but to an earth on the car?
If I  find it is past charging what ampage battery is best for the Scorpio 2.3?
thanks for reading,
Podge.
