2.5 TDi - unsolveable problem??? :S

Hi all!

I'm new on forum...
I'm Gabor from Hungary, and I'm here because of a 2.5 TDi year 1998.
We brought it from one "repairman" to the other, but nobody could solve our problem:

Car hasn't got torque, acceleration is almost zero. At 2100 rpm, when I wait for the turbo to push me in the seat... nothing happens. Almost no sound, only soft whistle... And under 2100 rpm it's weak too.
However I kick the pedal, no exhaust smoke coming...

- Specialists checked the turbo... It works fine. Not the best, but good enough.
- We replaced and adjusted the throttle
- I checked the MAP-sensor, measured on the red/yellow and red/white wires, at 800 idle it's 3,15 V,  3000 rpm it's 2,83 V, so I think it works fine
- VSS-sensor works, 'cous the gauges're working fine
- repairmen checked the computer (pcm) for mailfunctions... Nothing... No error code. It says everything works fine.
- I cleared the inlet manifold, Map can now measure the absolutely correct pressure, but nothing changed
- Replaced the MAF, helped nothing
- exhaust system is checked, found no obstruction
- EGR is plastered, but the wire is on it, and I think it couldn't be the problem, 'caus as I mentioned, no error code from PCM
- checked fuel tank for obstruction... nothing.
- engine starts well, good sound at idle rpm

I think, (and others've said) it dosn't get enough fuel. But what could be wrong? How can I check the electric gas pedal for mailfunction?

Throttle position sensor is working I think, because I can kick it on 3-4-5000 rpm, just no power senseable power goes omn the wheels.

What other electronic parts could do this thing?
Has anyone of you any idea, what I should check or replace?

I've already spent big amount on the car, I like it, but I'm so embittered of this.
Car is from the USA, and here in Hungary it's so rare type. Nobody knows what to do...
Other thing: could someone take a photo from the vacuum-pipes behind the right headlight?
Repairmen disassembled that area and I don't trust them now.

Please help me guys, you are my last hope...

Thank you very much in advance, best regards

Sorry, something other:

Is electronic fuel pump from the tank to the engine in the car or it works also with vacuum?

Because I hear no sound when I turn ignition switch on, and my ex-car whistled that time, but no sound from the scorpio

I suspect that the fuel injection pump is faulty.

If you look at the front injector there is a small wire coming from it which runs down the back of the engine.

This is the fuel sensor, its built into the front injector as one complete unit.

Thats your problem, replace it Wink

I also have this problem! No obvious "kick" from the turbo and generally slow. Could you tell me more about this fuel sensor? Fitment? Cost?

Many thanks

Hi Jon,

I've only done one and it was actually on a Jeep Cherokee but I used the sensor out of a Scorpio (they use the same VM engine)

They are expensive, not sure of the cost though, £80ish if i'm remembering correctly.

Straightforward swap over though.

Exact same symptoms, idles perfectly, but wouldn't rev over 2200rpm

Hi

 I have a Scorpio TD 1998 (125 BHP).
I have some problems with my car, the most irritating is power loese. The
symptoms that were noticed: slow acceleration up to 70 mph and no noticeable
kick in your back at 2200 revs when the turbo should come in. I change MAP
sensor (buy used but from working car) and reset CPU. My problem is more interest
because when i use below starting sequence car have full power, not always
(repeat sequence):

Starting sequence:

1 - turn the key to I position
2 - turn key to starting position (spark heating)
3 - turn back kay to I position and stay 4 second
4 - turn back to starting position (no plugs heating) and start engine
5 - i drive with fuul power

Normal sequence
1 - turn the key to I position
2 - turn key to starting position (heater plug) and start engine
3 - car is slower than my second 1991 TD scorpio

When i start the car usig my starting sequence and remove the plug from MAP
car have the same symptoms (no power).

Please help ME I AM DESPERATED.

Best regards
Karol

hi gabor

would your TD be an auto box version being a 98' fly by wire throttal ??

being a car from america perhaps someone hase been messing with the autobox / torque converter, a non standard torque converter can have serisous affects on the cars acceleration

is the exhaust system in good condition?

also sounds daft but does the handbreak work? scorpios are known for the rear calipers seizing up

Hi Matt!

Mine is a '98 with 5speed manual gearbox and electronic throttle. Gearbox is original and absolutely good. Exhaust was checked, everything's allright.
Brakes work fine, it cannot cause the problem...

I think I didn't mention, there was a time (2 years ago), when I had  no problem, car had full power.
I had to go to Budapest, so ~ 100 miles there...
In the evening I finished there, started back. On the way back, at the first overtaking I noticed that something is wrong.
Idle is good, car rev fine, but no or little turbo sound and no power.
I know, what the repairmen checked and replaced, and no more idea...

As you've read in the other topic, I replaced also the front
injector, and nothing changed.

Electric problem or something in CPU?
I have no more idea...

Maybee I take out the engine, and check every wire one to other( but I think if something was wrong, the diagnostic software would say it; but no error code), and take the engine to pieces.

I'm totally desperated.

Does the TDi have a Catalytic converter?

If so then look to that having started to break up.
I had a car once that ran perfectly  but had NO power at all. the very same syptoms you are getting and it was all down to the cat  it had broken loose and partially blocked the exhaust.
