24v Cosworth rear diff oil

Bit of a lame post but I'm wondering how you check the oil level in the diff? AFAIK you fill it till it reaches the hole - but how do you check the level beforehand. I'd rather not make the trip to get oil, jack the car up etc just to find out it's down by 1mm :-) I'm getting a faint thud from the rear when slowing to a stop and I figure checking the oil level will at least eliminate a poss cause. Could someone point me in the direction of an oil spec please - I searched the posts here but it's either not mentioned or my google fu is weak. Thanks Tim

| Hi Tim, I'd check the CV joints first of all. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/rearaxle/RAxleSpecs.pdf

Thanks for the feedback guys. Tekno - yep that's the kind of thing. Bearing in mind I'm no mechanic, and I've a 400-ish mile trip coming up on Thurs. How urgently do these need to be replaced/looked at. If urgently what kind of a hit will I take from a garage? As an aside - my radio needs to be re-coded. Who do I need to contact/bother with the information to get the code? Cheers guys Tim

hi there pm me the radio serial number. re the cv joints. one on my old car lasted about 5 YEARS before getting really bad (greasing every week). when i did end up replacing it, i had to do the drive shaft as well because the splines were worn (think that's what done the cv in the first place). should be about £150 for a cv joint (both inner and outer) and shaft fitted (i paid £130 2 years ago). hth
