Cillit Bang!!!

Hi all
Just thought I would mention a problem I was having with my heater matrix. The usual cold air/blocked matrix problem which I have on my current scorpio and my spares car. So I decided to try Cillit Bang in the header tank. I poured half a bottle in the header tank and let the car run for 45 mins I then flushed out all I could and the heater worked again. I had flushed this car before with no luck so gave up on it. I have no idea if this was a one off or it actually cleared the matrix. Thought I would ask if anyone else fancies a try and let us know the results.....  Undecided

Pretty risky, I must say. Let's just hope it won't start any other types of corrosion (e.g. with the aluminium in the matrix)!

There are quite heavy stuff out on the market. For cleaning edges just below water level in swimming pools there's a a phosphor acid based (~30%) agent I use also for cleaning bathrooms. Once I was careless and some of the stuff touched the metal sink and took off all the chrome. This type of stuff can be bought only in special stores. Stuff you buy in supermarkets may not be that effective

A couple of years ago I also had negligible hot air. My first attempt was using Forte radiator flush which produced a small improvement.

For my second attempt I disconnected the flow and return hoses behind the 24v engine and used a two part chemical radiator flush and external pump.  I reversed the pump several times and the flow through the heater matrix was excellent.

The heated chemical flushes were pumped and returned from a bucket reservoir.

There was negligible solid material at the bottom of the bucket.

On reassembly my heater was restored with extremely hot air, however after a few weeks I was back to square one with just warm air.

After heater matrix replacement I investigated the cause of the blockage. There were no apparent corrosion products but the aluminium tubes were blocked with what appears to be brown plastic. It seems that the plastic is inserted during manufacture and eventually breaks down and can totally block the aluminium tubes.

I had never heard of  Cillit Bang but the manufacturers specifically state that it should not be used on aluminium. If the heater radiator leaks you smell the abtifreeze.

Before the weather becomes cold I would contemplate fitting a new heater matrix.
