Poor running auto

Hi all
I have been offered a facelift 2.9 24v estate by my boss.
The car belonged to his sister and has done 78,000.
The only thing putting me off is a missfire at idle and the gearbox.
When going into D or R from P the car lurches forward even though i am not touching the throttle, revs are still at idle speed.
I have used the car for a couple of days and everything else seems good.
I dont mind doing a bit of work on cars but dont have a clue about auto's as i ride and maintain motorcycles mainly.
Definately not looking to buy something with major problems!!!
Also any thoughts on price as he has asked me to make him an offer?

R reg, 78,000 miles
Ultima 2.9 auto estate
New mot, 2 new tyres and bodywork and interior pretty much perfect.

hi mate

miss fire can be a lose plug (the can work lose on the 24v)

dodgey lead or coil pack

however take the MAF off the air box and give it a good clean with something like carb cleaner, the problems a dirty maf can cause are wierd and wonderfull and if its just dirt only takes a few pounds to fix  Grin

Hi Matt thanks for the reply.

I think i will borrow the car for a  week or so to check a few things out on it first and then think about an offer.

He is using the car at the moment as he has a broken foot so could be a couple of weeks yet.

Nice car compared to my mondeo estate 1.8 diesel but then again the mondy is easy to sort out problems on.

Two wheel arches to weld on and a front coil spring to do for MOT today, just hope it stays sunny  Smiley

Hi Badbobsession  Smiley

Cleaning the MAF is easy but dont rub anything as the wires are not strong, just give it a good squirting with carb cleaner, which will make everything bright and shinny  Cool.  Also ensure that the relevant hoses, to the resonance chamber and the airfilter box, are re-secured properly.  Cossies don't like any ingress of unmetered air!.
