Rattling from the engine

Hello. Went shopping today got in the car to come home, started the car and noticed a quite loud rattle. Now it sometimes rattles when i start it up in the morning, then goes away pressuming it's the cam chain tentioner. But this time the rattle was all the way home. Had to go about 15 mph for the rattle to stop any faster and it would return. The oil light was on all the time but havn't checked the oil level yet as it's pouring down with rain, will check that tomorrow. Am i right in thinking that the oil wants topping up  or is there something more serious....... Thanks in advance for any advice....

What kind of rattle?  Or is it more of a rumble?

Regardless, driving with the oil light on is BAD.  I'd be wnating ti drop the bottom end shells to chek the crank bearing surfaces.

Checked my oil level this morning, that was ok on the max mark. The power steering fluid was a bit low so topped that up, But i can't see that was the cause. Started the car up, slight rattle on start up, then the rattle stopped. took it for a 25 mile ride with no problems. So i don't know what happened last night with the rattling. But all seems ok for now let you know if it happens again........... Cheers

Or park it with the drivers side front wheel in a pothole Grin, I do and it stops most of the rattle. Once started give it a bit of a rev, up to 2000 say, to get the oil pressure up.

Hello. That sounds like the trouble. should i leave it while it seems ok. How do i find out if it is a broken cat......
And tried the WOT method and that works..... As for the pothole could i just park the car on the curb or something similar just to raise the passenger side......

Yes, if you monitor the rear oxygen sensors, assuming they are in working order, they should show a quite steady 0.45-0.5V current. If they are jumping in the same pace as the respective front oxygen sensor, the cat is bust.

Exhaust test is also possible, I'd imagine a garage can't take more than a few quid to do so as most have the tester.

Cats are cheap in the UK, only around £150 for the pair from buypartsby.co.uk
