Ok I went to see a Scorpio Ultima Estate at the weekend and agreed to buy it, but the HPi report the garage have done shows it as Cat C. This is due to someone going into the rear and cracking the back bumper. This was done through the insurance and consequently deemed uneconomical to repair Are they in general harder to insure?

They don't cost and more to insure, they are just worth slightly less on the 2nd hand market.

No difference at all, our Galaxy and mondeo are both Cat C, and as they are minor damage and inspected anyway the insurance company could not give a fig... Chances are there was virtualy no damage to the Scorpio. Although bumpers can explode into a bazillion pices if somone sneezes on them ( not like a good solid sierra bumper ) TT

dealer mailed me today, to say car has slight 'cattle grid' shake when coming to a stop when car is cold. didn't do this when I drove it, but he thought he'd let me know. It's only done it once to him

| I don’t think you should assume what the dealer describes as “slight 'cattle grid' shake when coming to a stop when car is cold” is the same as the “Cattle grid effect” as described on the site. It’s just a description & not necessarily connected. Dave

latest from the garage " have spoken with the customer and he withdrew the claim as the repair estimate was £1***, thus writing the vehicle off. It would appear that he spoke with my business partner about an inspection, to verify the chassis plate and he was told by my business partner (David) that he would deal with it, it would have been nice to have been informed!! The car has been MOT’d by us yesterday and passed, where we looked at the rear floor etc and to “my eyes” there is no obvious damage to the floor. I am unable to remove the “Cat C Marker” unless the vehicle has a replacement rear panel and bumper. I think this is something you should consider, before going any further. I for my part, am considering advertising the vehicle on Ebay, with the “Cat C” mentioned and selling the vehicle for a reduced price."

Good decision. Quote:I for my part, am considering advertising the vehicle on Ebay, with the “Cat C” mentioned and selling the vehicle for a reduced price. |
| He was trying to goad you into buying it - i.e. buy it now or someone else will! To be fair though, I couldn't care less about a cat c marker on a car under £2k.

that's fair enough. I saw the mot advise sheet and that plus the gearbox potential issue made me decide

I've bought a few Cat C and D vehicles, it doesnt take much to write a Scorpio off on a cat C or D, a couple of light units or a bumper will do it Has it been repaired?? It will need to be to pass the inspection. The "cattle grid" he describes sounds like it could be wishbone bushes or discs, nothing serious. Definitely nothing to suggest a gearbox problem. Go for it but at a cheap price, Scorpios arent worth much so a Cat C is a good lever to get it for less

Tif, the trouble is now that finding a "good one" with low mileage is nigh on impossible as most Scorpios were bought initially for the fleet market and had a good mileage on them before being thrust onto the second hand market. Who know though, I hope I am wrong!! baz
