low speed steering shake

greetings chaps, another conundrum for you. a phenomenon that has appeared virtually overnight ( not quite ) is low speed steering shake. at the moment I am recovering from the influenza of the schweinhundt, apparently, so I have not had the chance to get out there with the trolley jack and scaffold pole. from walking pace up to about 30 mph the steering wheel twitches away merrily but after this speed, smoothes out ok. there is no manifestation at speed nor under braking. the shake is rythmic/cyclic/rotational , bit like the old threepenny bit. I replaced the rack a couple of years ago ( overhauled ) because of a mammoth leak, (track rod ends not changed), so wishfully I am ruling that out. at the same time, new discs, pads, wishbone rear bushes fitted. the power steering fluid level is OK. the MOT was in September. any ideas greatly appreciated

Sounds like a damaged wheel/tyre?
Swap them front to back and try it again
Slack wheel nuts?

what about worn front wishbone bushes or track rod ends.mine has a similiar problem with steering wobble at low speeds and a light knocking over rough surfaces.i reckon that because i had to get the tracking done a while back and the aligner having to heat the track rod ends to cherry red to get them shifted i reckon that hes damaged the internals of the ends.new set from my local moto factors is £6.50 each.im gonna give the front suspension a good hauling when im off during xmas and i'll let you know of any outcome.

usually they would show up under braking too.
The knocking is probably antiroll bar bushes or link rods if its from the front.

hi there
i'd give 'bleeding' the power steering a go.
put the front wheels on some grass/loose grit and turn from lock to lock a few times.
don't go too fast or too slowly, if you know what i mean. 
see if that helps.

seasons greetings scorpio_man, "bled" the steering and all was well for a short period but symptom coming back. a possible clue for you though, during the icy conditions steering superb. are we talking less friction on the wheels the easier the steering ? if the bleeding virtually resolved the problem , are we looking at air getting back into the system and causing the problem ? your thoughts greatly appreciated

greetings man from the highlands, it is possible I cannot see the wood for the trees ! in view of the fact that the pump is original to the vehicle and has done 190,000 miles, I cannot complain if I have to replace it. time to price things up, thank you and best wishes for the New Year
