2.9 24v hydraulic tappets - tapping

Hi Wonder if you can help me with this one. My cosworth has recently started sounding very "tappety" if that's the right word! It's probably way overdue an oil change, I bought it about 12 months ago and haven't got round to it yet, lose some points for that I guess. I've done a search of the forum and read about the possibility of a loose spark plug so I'll check for that. Any advice on oil and tappet interconnectedness would be welcome. Have a good 2010 and thanks for all your help last year. Tim

Could it be the timing chain rattling? Is it worse at start up then clears or is it there constantly?

Highlander, thanks for the reply. Sorry I probably should have mentioned that to rule it out. There is a spot of timing chain rattle at start up but it goes quickly. The "tappet" noise I'm hearing only appears when pressing on the accelerator. at idle it's hard to notice but as soon as the engine is revved it's there. Would be amazed if it turned out to be a spark plug loose as it sounds like a right bag of spanners when it starts. Also it's a very regular noise which sounds revs related.

Thanks but I'm sure it's a metallic tapping noise rather than a gaseous "parping" :-o

Tim. Tappet noise is a very light tinny sort of sound which is usually present on start up if the followers are getting worn, but lessens when they fill with oil. This time of year piston slap is prevalant, this is a deeper rattle which disappears as the pistons expand within a couple of minutes. GOZZ.

cracked ex manifold or egr system, blocked oil strainer in sump reducing oil pressure, sludge build up in the oil feed to the head, broken cam bearing cap bolt, seen em all.

What oil pressure should there be on a 24v bob engine?, I might test mine at some stage.

Hi Thanks for the advice. I've checked the oil level and it's approx 75% up the stick between the two marks.

My bet would be the one of cats starting to disintegrate. Sounds just like noisey tappets and does increase with revs. Put a screwdriver on the exhaust manifolds in turn and then stick the blunt end in your ear and you should hear the rattle. HTH Tc

Thanks for the advice. When the risk of my ear freezing to the screwdriver has passed I'll give it a go :-p A silly question but as the sound is coming from the engine bay - I've always assumed the cats are underneath the car , are they actually closer to the engine bay? BTW I don't doubt your advice I work in architecture so I'm well aware of the crazy things that sound will do :-o

The cats sit either side of the engine just below the exhaust manifold. I actually thought the big ends had gone on my old 24v when in fact it was the cat failing lol. HTH Tc
