Autobox problem Scorpio '95

I currently have the same problem described elsewhere on this site. Either I have a snapped gear selector rod or a clip has come loose. In my case the helpful AA man put it in drive. I successfully drove home but I cannot now start the car.
I wonder if anyone can shed some light on the initial problem? When driving to a local supermarket I noticed that my windscreen wipers were behaving erratically e.g. full on when turned off though this corrected itself. When I returned to the car after 1 hour I turned the ignition and there was nothing, not even a click. Thinking that I might not have put it properly into Park, I moved the gear handle and could not then return it to Park. The AA man tried forcibly to change gear and I suspect he might have exacerbated the situation.
Could the failure to go into Park have been caused by a flat battery? (He obtained a reading of 10volts.)
Incidentally, I had no warning of anything being amiss - just the sudden, temporary wiper issue. My car has been regularly serviced and it has been ultra reliable. The weather conditions have prevented anyone coming out to look at it.
Hoping for some insight.

Hello and Welcome to the site Smiley

Does sound like a broken selector linkage.

The car wont start if its not in either Park or Neutral.

I would reckon the flat battery could have affected the wipers but would not have caused the selector problem.

Thank you for your prompt reply. It just seems odd to me that two problems surfaced simultaneously i.e. battery and gear selector.

Can you get it into Neutral or is it jammed solid?

Originally, I think I could get it into Neutral (though not Park) but once the AA man got to work underneath it became stuck in Drive.

Is the selector stuck/jammed or is it slack?

I'm trying to ascertain whether he's disengaged the selector underneath and left the gearbox in D or if the actual selector is jammed in D

Its probably an easy enough fix but without knowing or seeing whats wrong we'd just be guessing..

It is possible to bypass the starter inhibitor just to get it started and moved but you would have no reverse and you would be starting it in Drive which isnt safest option

I have had the AA out again. It is worse than I thought. Apparently the bracket holding the gear selector rods has sheared off the gearbox housing. I had a new gearbox a few years ago, fitted by a main dealer. I think it is going to be too expensive to repair. Thank you for all your help.

Its only two bolts that hold the bracket on, however the gearbox has to be lowered slightly to gain access to them, I had this one one of mine a while ago.

The bracket is made of a light cast material and it doesnt take much force to break it.

The pinion on the bracket that holds the linkage is seized, get some lubricant into the new one Wink

Thank you for the last two posts, which are very helpful. I am now considering getting the AA out again to get me started and then driving to a main dealer. I have a new car on order (4 months lead in) and I had thought that it was not worth repairing the Scorpio. I think it knew that I was going to scrap it.
