Can't open my rear hatch.

Just got my '95 Scorpio 2.0 Automatic estate yesterday. And compared to the wrecks I have terrorized the roads of Arctic norway with in the past, it drives like a dream. It has only 129000 Km (80156 miles) on it and 1 previous non smoking owner that followed the maintenance schedule religiously...all according to the salesman Only problem I have discovered is that the back hatch won't unlock. I can only turn the key to the right. If I try to turn it left, it stops solid in the mid position. Is it the lock, the wrong key or should I go and have my brain replaced? Any tricks I can try?

Could be just lack of use with the key or Lock or key worn. Does the centre section push in and move freely? have you tried WD40 to free it off. They do get a lot of dirt around the barrel and seize up. Have you got a second key to try?. Let us know how you get on.

| Only got one key. By the center section, do you mean the knob that you insert the key into, that is suposed to be pushed in to open? Nope that one does not move at all. We have some cold wetaher, but the car was sitting in a warmed up garrage overnight so it's not frozen.

I had similar problem, as advised loads of WD40 freed the plunger off, but key still would not work, had a key (no chip) cut, and bingo it works.

I need to have an extra key cut anyway if it comes to that. Anyway, drove it in and left it at the dealer in my lunch break, and they promised to fix it by the end of the day. As chance would have it they had just recieved som parts they needed to fix some other minor issues with the car that where scheduled for later in the week. So they will do it all this afternoon. ...it helps that my old man has been a faithfull customer there since they opened their doors in 1973, ha ha

They had a go at it at the dealership garrage, but since they fixed some other minor problems on the car it left them no time to do anything with it. So all they did today was apply some WD40. They said eier there is something mechanically wrong, or the lock has been changed by the previous owner, and he forgot to give the key. Anyway, they will take it in on Friday, and take the lining off on the inside to get to the lock, and either replace it, or fix it if that can be done. I think it's something mechanical myself as the knob can't be pushed in at all. Else the car is running like a charm, and nothing has fallen off yet

| To attempt to open the rear hatch with the engine running, I would need two keys. And I only have one, so yes, the motor was definatley not running

Am I right to assume that I should be able to push in the lock sylinder knob regardless of it being locked or not? Else I have sprayed liberal ammounts of WD-40 into the thing now, and hope it will come lose by the time I hand the car back to the dealer to fix it tomorrow

Well, it's been swimming in WD-40 for 10 hours and is still stuck... I guess it's nothing to it but let the dealer have a go tomorrow. To bad becouse I have to take the 4 dirty summer tires that reside in the back out trough the back side doors. I guess I'll have to find something to protect the seats then, as they are immaculat.... This so they can have access to the back to take the inner lining off the door to get at the lock... Thanks for all the answers folk. I'll let you know what the dealer finds out tomorrow...

hi there do you not have a remote? double pressing the boot button should open it. if the dealer has open, they might let you 'try' it on your car (programming instructions are on the site) to at least open the tailgate. you'll need it open to remove the rear trim. hth

No remote. Only the key. The previous owner lost his keys. So I guess I am left with the spare key. The car was a trade in, so this is not a regullar Ford dealership.

The saga continues. They managed to get the lock sylinder out, but it was completely worn out. So they will rebuild it so I can use the same key as for the front doors. But they need some parts that will arrive in a weeks time. So now I am driving around with a pice of wire trough the lock sylinder hole to open the tailgate. But of course now I can't lock it...lol So I have a length of rope fastened to onbe of the cargo fastening loops inside, and to the tailgate, so it can't be opened from the outside. Aaahh the adventure of purchasing used cars...

Okay, now it's fixed and everything is working. Must say that despite this iritating problem, the car has been a pleassure to drive the 2 weeks it's been mine so far. Also my first rear wheel drive car...and I have to admit it is a bit fun to switch off traction control, and push the S button and make the rear do it's thing in some corners when there are nobody looking here in wintery Norway
