Grinding sound when steering (even when stationary

Anyone any ideas on this. I have a 2 ltr Scorpio Ultima (N reg)
monday when turning the wheel I noticed a small knock which disappeared. Tuesday the knock returned when reversing out of a parking space at work the drive home was okay no real bad road handling seemed generally okay, but a greating sound upon turning which seemed to be growing more at the end of my journey only when turning.
I reversed my car on to the drive yesterday and took the wheel off but I couldn't really see a visable issue (and I'm the first to admit I'm no mechanic) but fortunately my stepson is.
on replacing the road wheel, I lifted the bonnet and (showing my wife the problem) noting when turning the wheel, the top of the suspension shudders (more on the right hand (drivers)side, but certainly was replcatied or traveling to the left shock too.
the knock happens even if the car is stationary, just turning the wheel will bring it on. I've not used the car tonight (ie I'm working nights) but I'd like to try and find the cause (and how much it going to cost to fix, before dragging my Stepson over to help.

hi there
have you checked the power steering fluid level? should be at the max line, but most scorpio's leak a little from the pipe below it.
re the suspension. in the towers there is a ball bearing run. using a straw, spray some WD40 in (you need to spray a lot to get some to go it.

Drivers Side coil spring has snaped in two, hence the Noise and movement.
thankfully a not to difficult fix, and not to expensive for part either. Euro car parts £35 per side!
