Few Problems

Just bought my first Scorpio. However got afew minor niggles with it.

Its a 2.9 12v engine and to me it sounds very nosiey. It makes a loud clicking/tapping noise and it sounds from the top of the engine but it drives fine. The oil has been changed.

When its cold is sounds to me like the exhaust is leaking from the manifolds but I have looked and they seem ok. I will try and upload a video tommrow with it cold and warm.

Other issue is the  bottom pulley which is in the middle of the engine at the bottom or the AUX drives seem to get coated in oil or oil and water mix.

There always seems to be some leakage from it on the floor next morning and while it runs it collects some fluid on the pulley. What can it be.

I will get a picture it needs be if it would help.

Many thanks for any help with the above.

tapping, may be the valve tappets have worn, on the 12v scorps they are hydraulic adjusted, - may have a blocked lifter

the exhaust leak, these engines do boom a bit, a sound clip would be helpful

oil leak, front crank seal leaking

Video uploaded to YouTube just now so the link might not work striaght away.

I know the front crank shaft seal is leaking and I will get that sorted.

Changed the oil for 10W-30 semi sythentic as per book and the ticking is still present.

So any other ideas what it can be.

The car drives loverly apart from this noise,

The engine was rebuilt 2000 miles ago by a Ford specilist.

Hi, Seen and heard your engine on youtube and it sounds like the tappets, As suggested, they are hydraulically adjusted and that you may have a blocked lifter.  Lee

These engines retain the tappet adjusters as they were before cats were introduced into the Granada at 'K' reg, hydraulic lifters were fitted at that time causing confusion whereby people thought that adjustment was still necessary. These lifters fail usually through neglect in regular oil changes and need to be replaced, unfortunately necessitating removal of the cylinder heads.Your engine ,if rebuilt by someone knowledgeable should not have rattling tappets,if they had been replaced, and the adjusters not messed about with ,the engine should be smooth and quiet. It would be worth removing the rocker covers and checking for slack at TDC,there should be no slack as the lifters keep the gaps closed.I know of a man who took his Scorpio 12v to a FMD after it had been run without water, when he got it back it sounded like all the hammers of hell, they had been trying to adjust the tappets  Roll Eyes

How do I get it to TDC.
