Painting a bumper

Sorry for a really basic question ...
One night last year, someone hit my parked Scorpio (P-reg, 2.3 Ultima Saloon) on its offside rear, and just drove off. I found out the next morning, discovering that the rear bumper was severely cracked (with some fragments missing) at the rear offside corner, the bottom was broken off the rear light glass, and there was some damage to the edge of the rear-offside wheel arch.
The damage didn't make the car at all undrivable, and didn't even stop it going through its MOT a week later (to my considerable surprise), and I ended up just having to leave the damage unrepaired. (I subsist just on incapacity benefit, couldn't afford to pay the excess if making an insurance claim, also couldn't afford to lose the no claims discount, and certainly couldn't afford to have a garage fix it at my expense.)
Today I've found a note tucked under the car's wiper by some unknown person (the car was just parked as normal on the street outside my house), saying they have a rear light I can have for a fiver, and that they also have a bumper, but it's green - my Scorpio is Dark Aubergine.
So my question is, if I were to get an already-painted-green rear bumper, could I just overspray it with a can of Ford Dark Aubergine from Halfords? Is it as simple as that? Or does changing the colour of an already painted bumper involve stripping off the old paint first in some fashion?

You could also buy exact colour coded metallic paint and clearcoat (the seller will know how much you need, e.g. on ebay) for a few tenners, rent/borrow a compressor and paint tools, and get it done with way better precision. You would probably need several cans to do the job, and you could end up with the same material cost as the real stuff. It's easy to paint before the bumper is on the car.
I think the paint nowadays covers the old, the paint dealer will know if you need a primer/base. Pretty sure you don't need to strip the paint.

hi,de-grease the bumper.but dont use white spirit or parrafin..i used meths and clean rags..next key the bumper with a medium wet and dry paper use the paper wet...key the bumper all over,including all the edges...with all the kit to hand as tlundkvi said...pick a still day (no wind)..and a warmish day....and paint it.....and lacquer it afterwards...let it dry for a couple of days...then fit it...i did my daughters rear bumper like this last year...  ..without any problems. .

This is very useful cos it's probs what I'm going to have to do as well. Meths tip is a good one, wouldn't have thought of that.
And the next numptie newbie questions is 
How does the thing actually fit on?

I sprayed a rear bumper last year - still waiting to be mounted on the car !
Think it took 4 cans of paint & 2 of lacquer which I got from ebay for about £3 each + postage.
Paint brand was Hycote which I've found to be a very good match.
Prep the bumper by keying the old paint with a Scotchbrite pad.
Got some pre-paint wipes from Halfords - about £2 for a pack of 5 or 6.

Dont know if this helps, but i have used a lot of aerosols in the past & have always foung Halfords to be the best in terms of coverage, colour & quality of finish. Also a Mike mentioned the pre paint wipes are excellent . Just remember to take your time & you will be fine

yes most people have there own ways of doing painting/spraying,we use a colour match service near to us here in essex..and got great results..the one thing that is quite right is...take your time..and do the job when the weather is in your favour,a warm wind free day ....so that just might leave you 1 day this year to do the job..

You can get a 'gun finish' using aerosols providing you use the same basic technique and use long steady strokes, keeping the can moving and turning on and off whilst in motion. If you do use a dirty shed, it's a good idea to clean away all dust and lightly dampen the floor before starting to paint.

Very good Mike..... Well I used to spray regularly in a workshop with a concrete floor and damping the floor after sweeping was my way of keeping the area dust free. By the way, the smileys don't work for me. I click on them and nothing happens.
