distorted sound from speakers

Hi
Has anybody had this problem before ?
Ths sound from my speakers is distorted but only sometimes ,other times it is OK, this happens on both cd and radio.
My system is the 7000.with the 6cd changer in the boot and the car is the Ultima 2 Ltr. Great car, only 81,000 miles, great condition. Oh I have owned this car for the past 7 years
Hope some one can help...

which speaker(s)? front or rear?
might be water got to them in the front, although they are water resistant.

is it from all the speakers ? i had this before , it was just that the front speakers had given up so just got new ones and problem solved

Head unit is the dash unit....it may have had it 
Try this....when it goes distorted, turn the volume right up (20ish) & you may hear it go clear again....I've had the same problem in the past & doing this sorted it out.
....Don't ask me why it worked though, 'cos I have no idea
