If one of the rear wishbone bushes is excessively worn, braking causes sideways movement and could clunk, though I imagine you will have checked that. GOZZ.

It maybe worth checking the vacuum to the servo from the manifold. I wonder if the diaphragm has started to perish slightly, this can be due to petrol getting down the vacuum pipe through a one-way valve. Now I'm not sure if Scorpio has a one-way valve or even if the vacuum comes from the manifold. I had a similar problem with my Zodiac last year, the diaphragm was perished and this was causing the spring to 'clunk' back into place after the brakes were released, cause was the vacuum pipe one way valve allowing petrol down the pipe. Just take the pipe off the servo an snuffed it! There will be a slight whiff of petrol, but it won't be damp and really reeking. Peter.

I had planned to run OBD on my car over the weekend to see what readings I get (with regard your other post about the MAF/gearbox flare). One of the things I was going to do was introduce an unmetered air leak at the manifold to see what effect it had. If it turns out an air leak is making this clunk the 2 problems may be related.
