2.3 Temperature Gauge

After talking to some of you at the Harewood House event I conducted some investigations into the dodgy temp gauge on my wife's 2.3 Ultima Facelift car. The gauge quite often reads cold when the engine is warms, then it may shoot up near the middle and next minute slowly drop to cold again etc. Well I conducted a dash diagnostics and reboot etc and it appears that the signals it receives are correct for the display. What I mean by that is if the car is warm, but the gauge reads cold the signal received is 255 which is correct for cold. I've caught it when the gauge is warm and the figure is around 129 ish which is right! (En9 t) This makes me suspect their is not a fault with the dash correct? If that is the case can this sort of fault be caused by the thermostat, or do they either work/not work at all? Could the wiring be changing resistance that would cause this, but their doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when it happens etc? Any thought ideas as I'd like to get to the bottom of this? Cheers, Simon

Had the same problem, re-soldering the instrument cluster fixed it.

Did you check the readings for the display that you were getting? What exactly did you solder?

I had the problem with the gauge and airbag light coming on and off, I have re-soldered every bit of the instrument cluster in the back. Takes some time but fixes most problems with blinking lights of any sort

before going to the trouble of stripping the dash out and all that, have you tried a known good or new temp sender, its an all in one unit that just screws into the manifold or somewhere in the cooling system... its item number one on the pic on the first page http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/engines/dohc2_3/2300CylHdRnew.pdf

it sounds like it is the temp sender to me..thats what i had same symptoms..reads fine for 5 mins then nose dives to cold and springs back a few mins later if the dash matches the gauge readings cant see its a dash problem...the senders dont seem to last very long

There are two sensors just under the heater hose outlet at the front of the manifold, the frontmost one does the gauge, the other is the sensor for the PCM. GOZZ.

On the 2.3 there is a large plug with a 10mm bolt through it on the offside inner wing? The temperature sender signal goes through that wiring and if that is taken apart and cleaned with contact cleaner that will most likely cure the problem. There are a multitude of contacts in there and a quick spray and rub over with a fine soft brush and reassemble a couple of times usually does the trick. I had exactly the same symptoms on my 12v , cleaning that big plug cured the fluctuating temperature gauge. Remained rock steady ever since and read correctly.

Cleaned the connector block and plug into thermostat with contact spray and it's not solved the issue. Does everyone think the next step is to replace thermostat? If so then how do you get it out and replace it etc? Someone was telling me at Harewood House that you have to be careful when you screw the new component in, otherwise it shears off? Cheers, Simon

It sounds as though they may have been talking about the sensor not the thermostat. The sensors have a tapered thread & mustn’t be screwed all the way in. They should just be nipped up with some suitable sealant, I use a few turns PTFE plumbers tape instead.
