flashing o/d light

hi can anybody help me just got hold of my 2.9 24v been waiting a long time for this one, now the problem did a run to york from manchester and the over drive light started flashing got to york had a meal came back home no flashing light, about a week later out on another trip and started flashing again but has stopped again when cooled down any ideas anybody

Welcome to this famous forum!
Besides the flashing O/D light, have you noticed anything unusual while driving? Did you owe a 24v before?

no didn't notice any other problems seemed to be driving fine. this is my 3rd scorpio had the 2.0 estate and the 2.5 td estate before this its just taken me a while to convince the wife to let me have the cossie. ive got the obd leads when i baught it ill try and find the software and code read it

Presume it's an autobox, what was the gear changing like after it started flashing? I.e. did it became "harsher", that is, not smooth changing

didn't notice any problems with the speedo or the power steering i was on the motorway at the time, i tried switching the o/d off and it did drop down a gear

no noticable differance with the gear change but i was cruising at about 70ish on the motorway

Hello Andy and Welcome 
Don't suppose you can remember if it was raining or wet when the OD light was flashing?
First off its the old faithful of cleaning the MAF

well thats good news
I had a 24v that used to flash in the wet and drop drive, it was a wiring problem.
Try the MAF first, a new gearbox oil filter and change of oil might help too, chances are its still the original stuff

cleaning the maff really does work, i had the same thing. followed the directions and works a treat
