thought i would start a new topic on my new prob so theres no confusion in probs. this though i think is a simple one, but as they say have all the gear but no idea lol. when starting engine and putting it into drive it will hesitate, then it will go into gear. then it got worse so started to use gear 1 to start to move off, and then change into drive, then it was fine while driving. but kept doing it everytime you de-selected but going into reverse was fine. when going off after finding gear it feels like its slipping. it does it hot and cold atf perfect not dropped and nice colour have cleaned maf sensor but still no change gearbox was rebuilt 4 years ago but looking at the history paperwork we have as it had a full history maf sensor has not been replaced yet in its life any ideas

It looks like ATF on the dipstick. Checking it via the dipstick won't help, water/coolant sinks to the bottom so probably won't show on the dipstick. That is why with regard the engine sump I suggested parking with the drain plug as the lowest point & draining some out. The pickup for the oil pump is near the bottom of the sump, so as water builds up it initially gets a mix of water pumped round but ultimately can end up with just water – even though there is plenty of oil in the engine/box.

Gearboxes can cope with a bit of water in the very short term but water/antifreeze mix they cant cope with at all

Any water / coolant in an autobox will result in it needing a rebuild, cos when it gets hot water turns to steam and takes all the linings off the clutch plates. I've seen guys change the oil and radiator, only to have all the linings come off a couple of months later. If theres any water in yr auto its very bad news I'm afraid Dave
