Check to see if u got engine braking in position 1, if not then it's busted the rear band. Strip down and rebuild time HTH Dave

His description was perfect, it happens not lots, but quite common, rear band selects reverse with direct clutch, and also gives engine braking in 1 with forward clutch. Therefore if no engine braking and no reverse, and a clunk just before it lost reverse its done the usual and broken the rear band If the box was good before this happened it will make an easy repair..... Give the old box to Stuart, and when he gets around to coming up here, I'll repair it then he's got another good 2.3 box to keep someone running !! Cheers Dave

Well I don't know about it being a good box, It had the catle grid at around 70mph, I thought it was the prop till I read about it ! Since the rear band has gone the vibration has almost gone ?

Cattle grid is more of a converter issue than gearbox, but if box is built well, it seems to keep it at a minimum Cheers Dave

| As an experiment could try driving it with the MAF sensor unplugged, see if it helps? But I'd wait until the "new box" is in, not worth it at the mo. FWIW for ages I thought my box was seriously sick, then I put a brand new MAF in, honestly was like getting a brand new autobox!

Yes, true Mike, Maf on most Fords has a significant effect on Autobox, also TPS. In fact anything that affects running of engine will affect a PCM controlled autobox on most cars. Dave

Well Stu dropped off the box back in september ! Now the weather is a bit warmer, I thought I do the box swap. I bought a new filter of eBay & got the fluid with mercon V. So this afternoon got the car up on the ramps & the back end on stands I've got as far as ready to undo the bellhouse bolts to drop the box, Everything has come undone with no probs except one of the studs snaped on the exhaust between the flexy & the front box Easy repair. I have took the sump off to empty the fluid, wow what a messy job that is ! Let's say good job I put some plastic down ! The oil was black ! & there was a lot of sludge on the strip in the sump. Tomorrow I'm going to put the new filter on the replacement box I'l take some pic's to. Steve.

Not done much today Got the box out, don't know if the engine or the gearbox has been out before ?, because the top 6 belhousing bolts were hand tight ! Took some pic's The broken stud, The front box is looking a bit rough, but the rest of the system is solid ! Home made transmission jack adapter The sludge from my box sump, when i moved the tub i used to drain the oil into it looked metallic when the sun was shinning on it ! The replacment box from stu (Highlander) Nice clean oil out of the replacement box New filter Hopefully i will get it back together tomorrow but I'm not in a rush As soon as the box is in, i will empty the cooling rad of the metallic oil ! Steve
