My lad, just picked up a modified car, not ford, the colone engine is from a 93 granada 2-9 mk3 efi, The car has a 5 speed manual box, apperently to fit this box, a 2-8 flywheel and starter motor have to be fitted, that has been done, but the noise when starting is dreadfull, i cant work out if it is the starter being the wrong one, or wether there is a mismatch in the pitch on the teeth of flywheel, Not Scorpio i know! just wondered if anyone has any experience of this mod. This used to be fine! Many thanks Bob

try unbolting the starter and spinning it up off the key, if it still rattles then the starter is worn out when i fitted the manual box to my scorpio i used all the 2.9 parts, maybe you need to use a 2.9 flywheel??

Right, firstly disconnect the battery and remove the starter motor - check for damaged teeth on the pinion gear. Next check - with the gearbox in neutral and with the starter motor still off the car, turn the engine over with a socket wrench ( remove spark plugs to make life a bit easier ! ) and inspect the teeth on the ring gear - also check for any odd noises coming from the bellhousing while turning the engine. Check the bellhousing to engine bolts are all tight. Is the noise worse when starting if the clutch pedal is pressed down or not ? I had a Mk2 2.8i Granada many moons ago which had a 5-spd Type 9 gearbox - the clutch plate broke up and although the car could still be driven it made a hell of a racket. Let us know how you get on.

What sort of noise? E.g. "brrrrr" could be pinion skipping on the flywheel teeth and not engaging, although engine won't be turning either. Either flywheel teeth worn or pinion cog "too far away" Just a thought

Thanks for replies guys, on the button Mike H! on closer inspection it seems as if the flywheel is too small in diameter! the teeth on the ring gear has lost all the tips! now given that the starter motor is in a fixed position, as is the crankshaft center. i am wondering if the 2-8 flywheel is too small and that it should be larger, perhaps 2-9 is slightly bigger, roughly 20 mill. would anyone have a 2-9 one accessible just to measure the diameter, or for sale, all i know is that the previous owner had this problem before (with the starter stripping the teeth!, and took great care to replace with exactly the same, which was the 2-8. this now appears to be the wrong one. anyone got one please, Thanks Bob

How about that 20mil is a lot I only thought of that 'cause my R series twin can do it a bit, I presume it's a bit of ring gear tooth wear, can be concentrated in "patches" around the circumference corresponding to where it typically settles at when the engine stops
