Firstly Hi everyone - can across the forum when I was hunting the internet to find answer to this problem. The ignition barrel has just given up the ghost on my car, got a new barrel arriving in the next day or two. But as I understand it you have to turn the key to pos 1 to remove the barrel - my key will not turn at all. Is this correct - any ideas. Many thanks.

Hello and welcome thats correct, there is a small spring loaded pin in the barrel (you can see it from above) which locks into the barrel housing, once position 1 is reached you can push this pin down/inwards to release the barrel will it not move at all? WD40 might give it enough to get it to position 1 to remove it. Do you have another key you can try? Failing that I think slowly drilling out the barrel internals is your best bet. I once gouged the internals out with a big screwdriver but it was a slow job trying not to damage anything.

I've tried the spare key and no joy - I'll give some WD40 a go when the barrel turns up. Many Thanks

Try also pushing and pulling on the key whilst trying to turn it. As Stuart says once in position one it flys out when the 'detent' is pressed but without that it is one heck of a job. This article explains the removal procedure.

I'm hoping the new barrel will turn up tomorrow or the next day. I'll let you know how it goes. Many thanks for your advice. When I get a bit more time I'll have a good look around. Been involved with forums before, can be great source of info and a good way of letting your hair down. Once again many thanks

Right an update. Managed to remove the barrel - after talking to a mechinic friend of mine found out that if you saw the front of the barrel off - make sure you get a good blade or 4, you can then turn the barrel and easy as pie it comes out. But now new problem, the dam immobiliser will not kick off - it is new barrel and new key, keeping an old key close to the new one - any ideas or how do you get rid of the immobiliser.

with the new key in the barrel and turned as if to start the car, wave the old key around by the barrel, you may not have had it picking up the old code, happened to me before

Can't you put the chip from the original key into the new one? They aren't that difficult to remove. I know I did that on an old Fiesta I had (95 model)

| How do you do that? I know that it's something to do with the red bit on the key, but how do you remove it?

Try taping the old key near the barrel and see if the car will start then.

| You can remove them with a pin. I usually remove the metal part of the new key and glue it into the plastic part of the old one

Forgive the ignorance - but what is "PATS" light?

Passive Anti Theft System. The little red light in the very centre of the dash flashes a code. Details are Here. That is what Stuart is referring to.

Nothing - you get to pos three and nothing, no start motor. Put the old barrel in and no problem. So guessing that it is the immobilser. Can't check anything at the moment as the car battery is sitting in the hallway on charge, managed to flatten the battery when playing around, was going to sort it today but it is raining cats and dogs at the moment.

| Its the transponder in the key rather than the barrel, if you can swap them over it should work
