Rev Counter and engine idle issues - 2.9 ultima 12

Anyone got any idea.....

Sometimes when I start the engine, the rev counter stays a zero and then after a few seconds it usually kicks in. I've had the car 3 years and the rev counter has always been very erratic.

Anyway the other day the rev counter remained down at zero and the engine kept stalling. I was able to drive the car by keeping the revs up but it would die if I slowed right down or came to a halt. When I was driving, the rev counter would go up and down reaching it's usual position for engine speed etc and then fall back to zero, it would do this all the time I was driving.

It's an N Reg 2.9 12v ultima automatic

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The rev coiunter picksup the signal from the pulse of the alternator. First thing to do is to check that the plug to the alternator is seated correctly pushed well in . might even be a good idea to remove and give it a spray with some contact cleaner.

The other plug to check is the bug one on the inner wing ( drivers side) and undo the small nut on the top and take the plug out give tht a good spray with contact cleaner and see how it goes after that.

Remembe rthe 12v is a basic system ( old) it still has a coil and contacts and a distributor so the old basics need to be observed. clean the top of the coil( innner wing pass side) check the leads etc..

If those pointers don't help then post back and I am sure Gozz the 12v expert will be here to help.
