Heater Fan : SATC : Permanent Blow

Hello Perhaps some of you can confirm what I suspect: One morning, after the recent Big Snow (and a period spent by the car in ice-enforced idleness), the heater fan failed to run at any setting. Changing the fuse resulted in the fan running at full blast permanently - as soon as the ignition is switched on, in fact. The CC works correctly (and responds to the fan control knob as expected), but the on-off for the fan itself and its variable speed are not responding. My garage diagnosed a faulty Heater Resistor (which seems to be the usual cause of a permanently running blower fan). However, from reading bits on the forum, it looks as if there is no such part for the full SATC Climate Control on my 2.3 Ultima, and that the problem may lie with the HBC. So, would you judge that it is the HBC control that is faulty and will require replacement, or is there a smaller control component that could be the culprit? Many Thanks IainC

The motor resistor pack and control sids in the top of thr heater box under the bonet down by the windscreen, its fully exposed to the elements

So is it a separate, replacable component? Its location would explain why the failure coincided with a large volume of frozen snow. Previous forum posts imply that the SATC has no such resistor and uses pulse-width control. Iain

If you have climate control you don’t have the resistors. A badly seated ribbon cable behind the CC panel can cause the fan to come on full, make sure the ribbon is pushed home and latched.

On a SATC there is pulsemodulation speedcontrol generated by the CC module, provided by two wires to the HBC unit. There's two HBC versions: one with a short coolingfin which has a habit of breaking down sometime and its later replacement with the longer curved fin. That's the one you want from the breakers. Two screws to pull it out from the heaterhousing in the rainwell under your windscreen. While you are there check if the single wire to the temperature sensor next to the HBC is OK. Try readjusting the flatcables behind the CC panel too as Tompion said. HTH Ray

As suspected, the HBC seems to have been the culprit: I bought one from eBay yesterday which was delivered at 9 this morning. I've just swapped them over, and normal fanning has resumed. Many thanks to all who posted. Regards IainC

Glad it worked for you - silence now and just the delights of the SATC. Just set it to one temp, feet and window and Scorpio takes care of everything... ) Do not forget to reset the system though, see instructions how => http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ccreset.htm Merry Christmas Ray
