I seem to be stuck, ive got one shock lowered out of the top fixing, it appears i need to lift it out of the spring! should i remove the spring? i cant seem to get the rear hub down low enough to remove the spring, and the help page seems to relate to the earlier models! 97 ultima estate 24. Any advise please,
Thanks Bob

Springs need to come out to get the shock out

I usually find it easier to drop the rear of the subframe
(one 15mm bolt on the later subframe)

and the antiroll bar (2 x 10mm bolts) that will give you enough to get the spring out, just watch and not stretch the rear brake flexi pipes.

Thanks Highlander, i am a bit stuck with this, it's raining no pit to work in, and i have got two fairly new shocks to fit, if i cant fit them they will have to be fitted back on to a banger car! so that the guy i bought them off can race! what a waste! is there a diagram which shows where the 15 mill bolt is? i'm pretty sure its not the anti roll bar holding it up, is this a job for a garage with a pit?
i would add that i have done one shock on a 2-3 with no problems, i guess that it why i posted up a thread asking the chassis differences between models! thanks for any advice, Bob

was your 2.3 an estate?

The chassis are the same, the subframe was changed (where the rear of the diff mounts onto it)

the 15mm bolt is directly behind the diff holding the subframe to the chassis (picture 2, bolt = no. 23)

These links show the saloon version but the above applies.

Early rear subframe

Later rear subframe

Excuse my Technical drawing skills Grin

Bracket 13 is actually bolted to the chassis, bolt 23 fastens the subframe into it

You can prise them off at the ends of the bar but I think it may damage the rubber if you cant move the actual bar to the right position

I usually just prise the links off their lower mounts using grease (on the rubbers) & a 2 pronged ball joint splitter to wedge them off, then more grease & a large pair of water pump pliers to refit them  Wink

I'm sure Simmo will come up with some kind of Essex bodgers remark after reading this  Grin
