probs with autobox sorry

hiya yes i know its pain in the butt again.
as you know we have had loads of probs with the car lately or should i say nearly a year now.
but we are now still getting probs with the box it was playing up before it went to the garage to have its head done, but since coming back its got more probs with box.

so i have read through some posts by other members and found the one that starts with -

" Problem with dipping mirror and parking sensors". Here

can anyone tell me what the easiest and cheapest one would be to check first, as wiring diagrams do my head in and dont understand them. but it has the same prob, also when first starting in the morning the box hates it and will be half asleep and not select gears properly and also struggles to move for about a mile then wakes up and works. once its warmed up its fine no problems just the reversing again.
its just as you know have spent alot on the car over the last months and cant keep spending. so any direction would be much appreated.
sorry about spelling
thanks

Presumably if it had the head done, the 'mechanic' removed all the ancilliaries?   So they would have fiddled with the MAF sensor, this is where I would start.   Give the MAF sensor a good clean with a strong Carb' cleaner, it'll only cost you the price of the cleaner, and I clean mine now and again anyway.   If you take the sensor off, and look closely you can sometimes see the build-up of 'clagg' on the two wee pins inside.   You would need to describe more fully exactly what problems you're having.   Is it just the mirror and lights not working, or are you having mechanical problems?

we cleaned the maf sensor do you think it could now be shot completey? also we have a leaking steering rack, ours has a sensor on it and according to a page on here its connected to the gearbox, but not all scorpios have the sensor.
the problem we have is

when first starting in the cold the gearbox feels like its slipping and just dosent want to know but once warmed up its perfect.
the second prob is that it will go in reverse perfect but the mirrors keep flicking and wont stay in position untill you take it out of reverse. also the reversing lights wont come on.

the car has been so good up untill the last 12 months and it feels like everything is going wrong, we look after it service it all the time etc. we dont want to give up yet as i think once you have a ultima you dont want anything else.

there is a car on ebay trade one same colour etc just a year older was thinking of seeing if he drops the price then get it and use it for spare parts as we need a tailgate too as its gone rusty.

You may have a couple of problems there.   I only know a little about these cars because I'm still learning, I'm more of an 'old-car' mechanic.   The more information you can give out on this thread, the more chance someone who really knows will give an answer.   Try to think the last time the car was running well, and what happened if anything to change that?   Like bad weather, or a bump, or sliding on ice, or a service by someone not fit to service it?     Sorry I can't help much more.

thanks pete, i know what you mean give me a sierra or escort and i can change the engines without looking, know them like the back of my hand.

it all started just after we had a problem with the engine the head had cracked, but it seems to play up in the gears when you first start the car, i do know it dosent like the cold, but yeah i think its 2 different probs i think the mirror and lights are a wiring prob.
what ill do is when the other half comes in ill ask him to describe the prob and write it in his words, which might even be more confusing lol

All sounds like bad electrical wiring. If the box had a real mechanical fault it would be permanent, not go away after a bit.

hi thats what we are thinking, last night i read something that another member had posted and it sounded like he was talking about our car. his problem had started after a leak too and it was down to the wiring loom where the anti freeze had soaked the wires, and also it was due to the i think its called the pringl switch what do you think?
im trying to find a good diagram of the switch but cant find one anywhere about how to change it etc any ideas?
thanks

The PRNGL switch is located under the gear selector and can be seen HERE also the whole of the gearbox manual is on the main web site  GEARBOX MANUAL

Snoopy,I think Tiggerlit may be referring to the range switch which is fitted on the nearside of the A4LDE box,the selector shaft passes through it,they are a source of bother when they wear out,new from Ford, about £70.The A4LDe box was blessed with not having one (12v/diesel).

No the VSS is a small unit near the back of the box, forward of that where the selector rod connects to the shaft is a flat brown plastic box with a multiplug on it,as said the selector shaft passes through the box and operates a series of contacts within it.

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/autotrans/TransRangSens.pdf

Also called Transmission Range Switch - photo 7 onwards.

IMPORTANT: it's adjustable for angle so make a note exactly where the original is and fit the new one the same. Think that's right.

took it to the garage to have another oil change and it broke down just before the garage thank god. over the last few days its had a airlock and kept over heating. but when taking it this morning this happened and it turns out we have a top hose thats perished so now need to get one of them. do you know if any scorpio or ford hose will fit like the transit or galaxy ones?
we are wondering if to try and get another ultima car as a donar, but want the same colour silver so if anyone knows of one going can you give me a shout thanks

Hi,

2 things spring to mind immediately,  Firstly PRNDL switch, and also, check that the oil level is correct, IDLING IN PARK, dip, wipe and dip again for corect reading.

If garage disconnected cooler pipes while working on it, it may have lost fluid, which will cause your bad engagements when cold.

Level wont affect mirrors / reverse lamps though, but range switch (PRNDL) will.
