The Tailgate Lock that won't unlock.

Hi to you all out there. My tailgate lock has given up the ghost. It will not budge. I cannot get into the rear of the car and need to get the Felted Trim Panel off to gain access to the lock mechanism etc.,the screws that hold the panel  secure are at the sides (by the feel of things, just below the glass line). I assume the the 4button headed push pins(2behind each drop-down flap above the pull-down handles) are there to secure and stabilise the central area of the trim panel. Is drilling out the lock in order to get to the release mechanism the only way around this dilemma?. Why was there no fail-safe lever or pull cord incorporated into the rear tailgate for such an event?,after all, locks have been failing ever since they were invented.

From memory do you not remove the plastic window surround to gain access in through the top of the fabric panel?

Or remove the grab handle panels in the tailgate and go through them

There must be a way in, i've done it before Grin

Hi to you all. Well, this turned out to be pain in the arse job. Not that I did it myself,I didn't. I ended up putting into the specialist auto-mobile side of a locksmith business, Bolton Lock Centre in Westhoughton,Nr Bolton,Lancashire. A 16mile drive,a 2hr journey home on public transport the back again later in the day. The lock was picked with a Locksmiths Pick Tool, striped and re-built. The lock had to be either picked or drilled out to open the tailgate. access to the fixings were only possible after the removal of the plastic window trim, the felted panel ( 2screws on the upper sides 6 screws along the underside lower edge)and and the trim piece that surrounds the lock. However £75.00 later and I can get into the rear with a key.

Hi Gozz. Yep,can't disagree but I needed to use the car to carry an industrial sewing machine to Liverpool tomorrow(Friday) and then leave the car locked up,and not knowing my way around the metal behind the grey felted trim panel I was unsure of the best place to go in. The lock needed looking at anyway and I figured that the best bet was to get it done at the specialists, that way if it goes wrong in a few weeks time I just take it back.

Hi Highlander. Would that coffee & chocolate biscuits be in an upmarket truckers cafe or some other eating establishment, or by invitation to deliver on a Home Delivery Basis?. Either way, my own Industrial Sewing Machine is a One Owner/User from new (1976) Seiko STW 8b. Regards,John (Little John, all 4'10&1/2") Robbins (other) Friend.

Hi Gozz. Not wanting to go to far off topic, but a bit of otherwise useless info!!.Clever the Chinese may well be,but the Seiko is Japanese and was a development on the Singer 111w range. Seiko continued to further develop the products from Singer until the Industrial side of Singer Sewing Machines went bust in a big way. Seiko then continued with its own fully developed products against many other very good manufacturers from Germany,Switzerland,Japan & America. The biggest threat is now from Taiwan. Albeit  Brother have taken over sewing machine manufacture at the Highlead factory and the machines are now built with the reliability of Brother, again Japanese.
