2.5 TD MAF and MAP

My new manual TD isn't running as smoothly as my old auto and has the familiar loss of pickup around 2200 revs. It sometimes feels a it 'lumpy' when idling. I've just had a full service, replaced all air and fuel filters and added Forte diesel cleaner. I've also cleaned the MAF and have a good 500 mile round trip to Leeds this weekend to blow the cobwebs off. If the loss of power and lumpy idle persists when I return my question is can the MAF and MAP from the auto car be swapped straight into the manual? Reading the post on 2.5 TD No Turbo boost it seems that it can't. Also, the crankshaft pully is a quite noisy, is it better to try to source new or just swap? Cheers, Steve

Guys, the new one is a 1997 2.5 TD Ultima maual. My old one was 1997 2.5 TD Ghia-X auto. It does feel as if it's being starved of fuel then running out of legs from 2200 revs onward. Maybe it's easier to swap the old pump in as my old one is being stripped down for spares. Then I can look to get a new diaphram. Cheers, Steve

your auto one will be the fly by wire system your problems sound exactly the same as mine and i know my diaphragm is failed as you look at your engine you will see the throttle linkages, in front of that you will see a domed ally lump held on with 4 screws, take them out (trying not to move the throttle pos sensor) you will find the diaphragm, its under spring pressure so be careful to prove it was at fault on mine i bodged it with a bit of polythene bag over the diaphragm and put it all back together and it worked! just need to find a new diaphragm now

Thanks Matt. Could you point me in the direction of the domed bit on this photo? Steve

Ah its another fly by wire one the red circled bit would have been where to look, its possible it still may have one on the electronic setup but im not sure i do know that the map sensor can play a part on the setup you have marked with green arrow 1 one can be found here http://www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk/PartDetails.aspx?s_pc=PMAP3016&s_v id= arrow 2 is the maf and always respond well to a good clean arrow 3 is the number 1 injector with the needle lift sensor, the wiring can be damaged and be shorting out through wear and tear, worth giving it a good check number 4 is the temp sender to the ecu (the gauge has its own on head 4) when i was messing with my td unplugging that sensor made a huge difference to my engine, again check it for the cracked wiring insulation etc ive not arrowed it but take off the egr valve and see if its sooted up to the point its unable to work its the little vacuum operated device next to the inter cooler out let (manifold inlet) pipe

That's brilliant Matt. The first thing I did was clean up the MAF, it made a big difference to my old one but this one looked pretty clean anyway. I'll try to get round to the rest this weekend. Got a big trip to Leeds tomorrow so may not have time until Monday. I have an identical 2.5TD engine in my old car so I can compare and swap components if necessary. Could you highlight the egr value - I'll print off the result and take it out to the garage with me. Thanks again, Steve

HI Steve ive modded the pic i put up, Egr marked in blue circle, you'll see that the pipe leading to it also goes to the map your old map should be interchangeable, as will the maf and egr

Thanks Matt. Only just got in and off to Leeds very early in the morning. I'll start the swap over next week and keep you posted. Could do with a break really as son's Golf wont start, daughter's Clio has a swimming pool in the passenger footwell... as for my 'other' car, it's been waiting for some TLC for ages. At least it's got a Scorpio engine Steve

So far I've swapped and cleaned the MAF, swapped the EGR, swapped the MAP and pipes and vacuum unit above it and it's made no difference. All the swapped parts came off my old diesel which would pull throughout the rev range so I assume are working. Next is the #1 injector test and temp sender, fingers crossed. Failing that I guess I'll have to try to get it hooked up to a fault reader. Steve
