Electric Seats don't work

Hi,

Yet another electrical problem with my wife's 2.3 Ultima, but this time the electrically operated seats.Cry

This morning my wife pressed the memory button and the drivers seat started to move as normal, before stopping suddenly. She was not able to get the seat moving again and had to take the other car to work.

I've checked the car tonight and the 30 Amp fuse had blown (position 6) in the central fuse box. I tried the memory button and the mirrors adjust as normal.

I tried to replace the 30 amp fuse and got a spark as I was placing it in the slot, causing the new one to blow!

I presume that means I have a short?
Has anybody else had this problem?
I'm not great with electrics so are there any easy tests I can conduct to check what is faulty etc?

Is there a way of moving the seat forward manually?
Huh

Cheers,

Simon

Fuse 6 is dedicated to the power seats and memory.
Its powerline runs directly to the Power Seat Switch and the Memory module under your seat.

It also runs through the doorway in a rubbertube. Suspect.

C212 and C221 connector are on the floor under the seat; suspect because of movement and chafing.

I would also suspect the switch which is easily prised out for inspection and the connectors.

Since you have a "hard" short, causing a 30 Amp fuse to blow, one way of simple testing is to connect a 12V lamp in the two fuse's contacts, of course leaving the fuse out.

Tie it to a long twincable so you can see it near you while you work in the car moving and wiggling all cables and testing connectors, connecting/disconnecting and eliminating.

Once you hit the short's location the lamp will go out or flicker telling you where to repair.

Good candidate suspect is one of the five motors shorted in the seat.

Just to let you know that the fault was a wire getting caught underneath when the seat moved causing a short!

I'm glad to say it's all sorted now.

Thanks,

Glad you found it.

So it was "on the floor under the seat; suspect because of movement and chafing" after all.
