Rev counter problem 24v

Just bought a 24v 
It runs well but after about 5 mins the rev counter goes crazy, it flickers up and down even when the car is not changing gear. the autobox is changing fine and the engine is not following the rev counter. The car had a new altenator 14 months ago.
Anyone have any ideas?

Are the wires tight on the alternator ?
