I would like to replace the thermostat in my 2.3 ,but a year or so ago I had the inlet manifold replaced at an FMD costing a fortune ,I dare not touch it .The manifold was replaced because it cracked near the thermostat housing .I remember seeing something on the forum about this problem before but cant find it .The thing that worries me is doing up the nuts afterwards ,One to many turns and snap ,new manifold needed ( and its getting very hard to hide how much I am spending on this car from the wife ) so if anyone has experience with this problem please let me know .....regards david

They usually crack because of age & heat. Over tightening will usually just spin the bolt inserts.

It's the sensor inserts that are the most common casualties of over-tightening, as the sensor threads are tapered & doing them up too tight can loosen the insert from the manifold. The thermostat housing bolts aren't tapered, so will not tend to loosen the inserts.

As Tekno says, they don't need that much torque. Just nick them up until they feel tight, or if you have a torque wrench, then they should torque to 18Nm (last pic on THIS PAGE)  Smiley
