Squeal when near a full lock.

If I get near to applying a full lock when turning I have just started to get a load squealing sound. It happens when turning left or right.

The only thing that I've done under the bonnet recently is replace the fan belt.

Could anyone suggest things that I can check?

Thanks,

Steve

Cheers Matt. I'll adjust the tension upwards a bit and see what happens.

Should be a spring loaded tensioner Steve, although they can fail.

what engine is it?

Power steering fluid level ok?

Hello Highlander, it's a 2.5 VM diesel. I checked the tensioner when I fitted the fanbelt two weeks and rechecked after 300 miles as per the instructions. All were ok then a day or two after I noticed the squeal.

The tensioner seemed fine but I gave a little squirt with WD40 as I opened and closed it in a vice.

I'll recheck the fluid levels later today.

It is right though isn't it, it is a bit noisy at full lock normally anyway. (?) This has come up before, but can't remember the details, also that you should avoid holding it on absolute full lock anyway, not good for the rack seals or something, soon as I get that noise I always back off a bit.

This is more a subtle pump type noise, not a squeal, I should be clear.

Appendix ~ if slipping could be your new belt is too long? Slippery stuff on the pulleys?

True there is no means to adjust the tension

It was the tensioner that was at fault. The belt was getting increasingly slack and squealing even at idle sometimes. I swapped one from my crashed car and all is now quiet.
Thanks for the advice everyone.

Hi Mike, I didn't think it could be the tensioner because there was no squeal with the old, very worn and slack, belt and I assumed that the new one would be slightly shorter anyway.

Befor fitting the new belt I tested the tensioner by compressing it a short way in a vice, squirting a bit of WD40 in and releasing it. Maybe it didn't release the whole way.....

You need someone else do it while you've got the bonnet open so you can have a listen where it's coming from
