Cruise Control playing up
« on: Apr 3rd, 2011, 10:17pm »

What started out as an intermittent fault with the cruise control on my ’96 2.5td has now become permanent.

Having worked fine for the last 70k in 2 years in the last month the CC became 50/50 as to whether it would engage or not. It now doesn’t engage at all.

The CC light illuminates when I switch it on and with the battery voltage displayed on the odometer it drops from 14.3v to 13.9v so somethings happening but it doesn’t actually hold a set speed.

I’ve had this problem before on a previous Scorpio & was fixed by replacing the CC motor, so I borrowed & fitted a known working one without success despite the CC lamp coming on & the voltage dropping slightly.

Can’t find a dedicated fuse so I checked the ‘electronics’ ones & all seemed ok.

The cable is free & properly attached, the CC cuts out when you touch the clutch or brake pedal, can’t think of what else it could be unless its somewhere in the loom  Undecided

Any help appreciated

Hi Simmo, I had a look through there but it seems to apply to the later td engine where the CC is done electronically without the motor. By the looks of it the earlier td's like mine use the petrol system, I'm beginning to suspect maybe a bad earth or the big multiplug not seating correctly although all looks to be fine I may have to get the multimeter out...

The VSS is giving a reading to both the analogue and digital display so I can hopefully rule that out.

is your horn working? as it uses the same fuse on the petrol models.

Just tried it & the horn doesn't work however the fuse is ok. Last time I used the horn (which was working fine) was probably roundabout when I last used the CC before it gave up. The lamp comes on so power must be getting through albeit only to part of the circuit Undecided

The CC motor I borrowed was from a 24v however externally they're identical so I would have thought most of the petrol & diesel CC parts are interchangeable but if not then I may have to find a working diesel one & try that.

hi there

iirc, all the motor are the same. it's the cable length that's different.

maybe need to look at the wiring? Undecided

I think that's probably next on the list to have a proper look at Sad

Are there any wiring diagrams available at all?

Thanks, Matt

Sorted  Smiley

The clutch pedal wasn't returning all the way to rest so the CC was thinking the clutch was constantly being pressed.

The horn seemed to have fixed itself by itself, much like many of my cars niggles if you leave them long enough. For example, the head gasket of the centre 2 cylinder heads went last week (water pouring from the gap) and was using 5L of water per 50 miles. 3 days later and its sealed itself and not used a drop Smiley
