At last !!!...someone else who is suffering the unexplained front brake pad clunk I posted the same thing over a year ago HERE I still haven't sorted the problem (20K miles later ), although I'm pretty sure it's down to the age/wear in the calipers. The brakes still work fine & always pass the MOT & council taxi inspections...it's just that they moan in reverse & then clonk when applied...then clonk again when applied going forward

So I am not the only one... fitted new carrier greased etc but comes back after 5 miles driving when disc/pads hot will try the mintex pads as you said..tks for info....pad needs a clip on the end to fill the gap...couldnt be that hard to make a 3 sided spring stainless clip.... but in practise it is..ive tried stayed on for 2-3 weeks etc ..!! is the mintex code MBD 1620 ? just double checking

The Mintex pads only solved the problem for a while, but good luck anyway. Personally, I'm going to try a new pair of calipers

John, I finally got around to replacing the front calipers with good second hand ones (£20 each) at the weekend (but kept the original pad carriers in place) & am happy to report that the problem seems to be resolved.....no more clunking or moaning The old calipers' piston outer seals were badly stretched & wrinkled...the N/S one had completely come away from the piston & was touching the pad Although I haven't stripped down the old calipers yet, I'm thinking that so much water & grit had got through the seals, that the pistons & bores are most likely corroded & badly scored. The pistons were probably sticking slightly (moaning noise), & also moving laterally (a fraction of a millimetre) when pushing the outer pad against the disc, causing the pad to 'clunk' against the pad carrier ....Just a theory mind you....won't know until I strip the old calipers down Anyway mate, just thought I'd let you know P.S....now the rear brakes are starting to click very slightly when braking in reverse. I'd lay money on the fact that after nearly 236,000 miles, the rear calipers are starting to go exactly the same way as the fronts did

Hello Jonny thanks for rembering to keep me updated...I had come to the conclusion it was the caliper..Ive had the carrier changed and it helped a bit......its still there(the clunk) but less so; maybe will get around to changing the complete caliper some time..thanks again John

John.....please disregard my previous post & I hope you didn't pay out for new calipers on my account... .....My brakes are back to clonking & moaning again I am now completely perplexed .....It's as though, as soon as the copper grease starts to get a bit old then front brakes start to clonk & moan. Removing the pads, cleaning them & re-copper greasing them seems to sort the problem, but it still comes back after a while. What to do eh ? ...changed the calipers, tried different carriers, new sliding pins & seals, various sets of pads, different discs & the caliper bolts are tight.......but to no avail Is it possible that pattern pads just aren't made to original spec anymore ?. And seeing as they are the same pads as Mk1/2 Mondeo, then it would be interesting to find out if any Mondeo owners have reported the same problem in their forums. Adds a new meaning to the phrase....'Clunk, Click, every trip'

| I have the moaning in reverse but not clonking when applied - although I'm sure they knock a little when going over rough surfaces - changed inner track rods, drop links and bushed so it's not the suspension knocking.

Jonny....I didnt change the caliper as I had changed the carrier and i thought only play in that would cause the clunk...it is movement of the pad for sure in mine causing the clunk but dont know how to fix.....modern pads have clips to fill that space so thinking about folding some stainless to fabricate something to fit over end of pad........thanks for note though..

Old Fiesta Mk1 pads I think had the very clip you's are looking for. That and Escort mk4 with vented discs. I believe you can still get them from Ford, as a pack of 10.

It does sound like clearance tolerances re pad in caliper ~ another option is too tight of course

Just had a thought ~ check that the pads haven't worn wedge-shaped ~ slightly thinner at the back edge vs the front edge ~ I had this problem with Brembo's a while back. Just a wild thought but may mean extra movement when closing up, if you see what I mean (?)

pedropedro. Only the higher end of the pad plate touches the caliper, one screw would do it.I always find it necessary to dress the abutment points as the pads are too tight, even when the housings are perfectly clean, opposite situation to yours. GOZZ.
