Front Fogs

Hi Chaps, hope you can help.

Regrettably I've not been on for quite some time as the car is and has been off the road for the last 12 months (My fault really). Cry

I was to be honest due to parts availability and the need very soon for an exhaust, contemplating with moving on, but unfortunately funds won't permit so I am now attempting to get her back on the road.

The problem that I am having is with the front fogs. Initially they would not work at all, but having now replaced the R9 relay they now work but won't switch off unless there is no lights on at all. So this means even when you switch onto side lights on they come! I have two headlamp switches both of which I have tried with the same outcome.
Also the LED indicators for both the front and rear fogs don't light up at all.

Any suggestions please.

Thanks

Is the replacement relay the proper one? Wiring problem?

Hi Highlander
Yes, brand new from Ford.

Switch is the easy solution but assuming both of yours don't have the same problem its not that.

Did they used to work normally previously?

Someone hasn't wired them that way? so they come on with the lights? (illegal but apparently it makes you look cool)

If they are now getting power when they shouldnt be there must be a short after the switch somewhere..

Wheres it been sitting in the 12 months?
mice eating wires possibly?
Dampness?

Mike had a similar fault on one of mine after a time in storage. Fault on mine was water/moisture under relay. Only tiny spots but enough to play up. Try and listen for any relays that buzz. Check all relays for arcing. Had the hairdryer on mine and left to air in the sun. No problems since. Smiley

Have you tested the relay? No continuity between the 2 large spades when removed. If you want to try a substitute I just tried the brown one for the horn and that worked fine for the fogs.

Although having written that I've just checked & both LED's work with the relay removed, so unless both light switches have faulty LED's it's unlikely to be the the relay.

Yes everything worked perfectly previously and no one has ever touched the wiring, especially mice.

The cars not actually not to bad apart from one arch.

At this stage all the car needs hopefully needs to get through the MOT is
1.  fogs working correctly
2.  possibly a steering tie rod  (already purchased)
3.  possibly x4 tyres (treads are fine but sidewalls showing some signs of cracking) - (still to choose a brand)
4.  O/S/F seat belt (already purchased - fitting this afternoon)
5.  arch welding up
6.  hopefully not an exhaust

The problem started before the car came off the road but I was to preoccupied at the time to look into it at the time and never even got around to fitting the relay before today.

Just now attempting to take the front bumper off to have a look at the back of the lamps.

The foglights can easily be removed without removing the bumper

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook124.gif

The handbook is a bit vague, prise the indicator lens away from the foglight, there is a metal spring clip holding them together, you will see it once you start moving the indicator lens. the outside edge of the indicator is hooked under plastic lug, difficult to explain but simple once you see it Smiley

Once the indicator unit is removed there is a phillips screw holding the foglight unit to the bumper and tab beside the foglight lens than locates it in the bumper.

I would doubt however the fault is there

You might consider used ones for that?

Front fogs are not part of the MOT (they don't have to be working)

If they're coming on with the headlights take the bulbs out until after the MOT, that will give you more time to sort them out.
