Rolling Noise??

Hi Guys, Not sure how to describe this. It sounds like I can hear an underlying rolling noise other than the wheels Huh It increases and decreases with the rolling of the wheels, front/back I'm not sure. Any ideas/possibilities. Cheers Lee

Wheel bearings, CV joints, diff, prop, gearbox etc?

Any difference when turning/cornering or when under load, accelerating, coasting, on overrun?

Hi Stuart, Do not notice much at high speed what with road noise and radio/no radio. Pulling away and local driving you can definitely hear it. Only thing recently done was changed discs and pads and had the tracking done. Tyres do screach sometimes going round corners, unintentionally of course Smiley

I wonder how well the wheel alignment was done?   If the wheels are well out of alignment then you'll get more road noise.

Hi Lee I have the same problem with my scorpio after changing the discs, pads and doing the tracking which was way out.
I assumed it could have been the new discs and pads bedding in which are supposed to take about 200 miles but I have done 5 or 600 now.

Mine is just a low rumble that increases with speed but not changing when going around corners.

Lee,

Get a bit of string and check that wheel alignment, the wheels should be almost parrallell, so string from the inside of the wheelrim at the back, and then front of rim the string should be the same length Wink

Sady a lot of garages are useless at setting wheel alignment and don't know the difference between a degree and a mm
Sad

If it's out it wil b****r your tyres in a very short time Sad

My LAST ever visit to a garage was to get them to fit a steering rack to a Rover 827 (as I just didnt have the time)

The tyres were scrubbed through within three weeks and the tracking was so far out you could actually see the wheels pointing together!  Grin

I know they're not all bad but I have an inherent distrust of all garages!  Grin

Even our local one which the work uses, while they are generally good we do get the odd incident!...

After fitting a new alternator to the big van it came back and I found it had no power under load..

Fault : wires pulled out of MAF (about 2 inches from the alternator)!

"Wasn't us m8, must have been like that"!

New OSR caliper fitted recently, van came back with one wheel trim missing (yes the OSR)

"wasn't one on it when it came in m8"!

I have put different tyres on since having the tracking done but I have done over 1,000 miles since fitting them and they don't seem to have worn down at all.

The low rumbeling started after changing the discs and pads but before fitting the tyres again suggesting the pads and discs bedding in. Having said that I would have thought they would have bedded in by now or maybe the mintex pads are so good they take forever to bed in?

Have you had new tyres fitted recently ?.....some tyres are noisier than others, especially budget ones.....or maybe the old tyres are getting worn ?

Had a problem with the wifes Scorpio estate soon after we bought it, in that there was a terrible droning noise coming from the rear. I was convinced it was coming from the diff.
Turned out to be the rear tyres (Wanli's with 3mm left) that were the cause....they really did make a hell of a drone, even at low speed & slowing down (almost to stop).

New tyres (not Wanli) solved the problem & the Scorp has been quiet as a mouse ever since  Smiley

Couldn't agree more,

Me too, 35 years in the Motor trade, I've seen almost all of it LOL, but still hear "new ones" even these days  Wink

Had a broken leg years back, and needed new rear shoes in my twin wheel Transit..........
Couldn't be @rsed to do it as I was on crutches, so let a mate of mine in the trade do it in his MOT garage,

Picked it up, drove down the road, pedal hit the floor almost, hadn't wound the adjuster up one side, so I ended up doing it my bloody self after all !!

One and only time anyone ever worked on a vehicle of mine !!

Cheers Dave
