Hi, just a little problem. My idle speed is 1000 rpm it stays at that wether it be hot or cold, should I lower it to about 800? if so how do I do it. Have heard that the high idle speeds can damage your auto box. Any advice most welcome.

Could also be engine coolant temperature sensor, the desired revs drop as the engine warms up. It's a different sensor to the one the gauge uses so you can't use that as a guide.

| hi there my 2.3 never raised the revs at any time. always stayed the same 875 or there abouts, hot or cold. my mondeo on the other hand, can go up to 2000rpm, then down to 1500rpm. the revs fall as the temp rises. down to 750rpm. hth

I based that on what happens with my 2.3 & what is shown via OBD. The actual revs were within a few revs of the desired revs. The readings I took were: With coolant at 56 & IAT at 58 the desired idle speed 1184 RPM With coolant at 198 & IAT at 92 the desired idle speed 864 RPM

Just had a quick read of pooridle.htm and unfortunately it went straight over my head, The only thing I have managed to do is repair the wiring loom and cleaned the MAF twice in the last month, I am about to atempt a gearbox oil and filter change which will be the most I have ever attempted on a car, so am still learning and am fare from a machanic.

If MAF signal changed due to being cleaned may just be the reason, the PCM has to relearn the new settings. (?) How much driving do you do?

don't normaly drive it for longer than 20mins at a time, did go to Blackpool the other day which took just over 2hours on A roads going there and 1 and a half hours coming back on the motorway. Have cleaned the MAF again since then, off to Derby in a weeks time, which will take about 3 hours or so on a mixture of A and motorway roads.

Read that and coz im new as a machanic it was a bit over my head, havent got the software or cables to check the diagnostics. When warm the idle speed is about 950 and when you put it in gear before you excelerate it drops to about 850 ish.

you may need a new MAF All I can suggest then is to check for air leaks on the air intake pipes and manifold, clean the idle control valve and throttle body. p.s. does the aircon compressor affect the idle when it cuts in?

Don't forget you can run it with MAF unplugged, just to prove or disprove that has anything to do with it, or might even cure it (it forces open-loop fuelling mode) Plus / or, throttle position sensor might be dodgy, that can cause some weird things to happen as well (?)
