Rear wobbling

Hi my scorp went bang then the back end started wobbling and bouncing all over the place.
The AA recon it was the suspension collapsed or a spring broke.

I tested the suspension with the o;d test of pushing down on it and it seems ok. I checked the coils drive shafts and suspension components from underneath and the look and feel ok.
The o/s wheel seems to be sticking out at the bottom so thought it might be that wheel bearing but after jacking it up and wiggling the wheel about there seems to be no movement at all so I am stumped as to what it might be so any ideas anyone?

how much of a wobble was it?

when you jacked it up did you check the rear subframe mounts and the diff mount?

also look at the aintroll bar drop links and the rollbar bushes

#1 suspect has to be the wheel bearing...common failing point on these cars.

I thought it was the wheel bearing but the wheels when jacked up don't seem to move side to side or up and down when I try and move the wheel. The diff didn't seem to move when I tried to move it.

I will try and get it booked into a garage to use their car hoist to check everything underneath tomorrow

It can be quite difficult to detect wheel bearing failure. I find the best way is to leave the centre nut tight, undo the 4 carrier bolts, you can then pull the carrier out just far enough to revolve it around the shaft. It’s much easier to detect any problems that way as you’re not turning the drive shaft & dif.

Speaking of the latter, sure it's not a broken up UJ bearing, prop / drive shaft or whatever? If siezed up at an angle that would cause "flailing about" of the back end, plus the terrible noise, happened to a mate's dad years ago, prop shaft that was.

Can you turn the rear wheel(s) by hand as "per normal" ? That is, with normally expected ease. Handbrake off & in 'N' not 'P' of course Grin

It is booked in to the garage at 3pm so I and they can check everything then. It was parked up for 3 weeks after this happened and I had to reverse it 10 feet and there were no shakes or bumps which is odd. The big test will be driving it 200 yards down the road to the garage.

Checked it all underneath now and the only thing that can be found is the near side bearing has disintegrated and destroyed the hub. On hind sight that could explain why the brake disc and pads on it disintegrated about 4 or 5 months ago.
