Car breakdown.

Hi Guys, The ultimate has happened and the headgasket has gone on my 2.0L. The temp guage went topside real quick, steam out of the exhaust followed by water then oil coming out of the air intake pipe. Had to be transported home by the AA. Not sure if it's worth repairing( never done a headgasket before)

You need to take the head off and assess the damage, being a 2.0 it shouldnt of cracked the head between 2 and 3 but you need to check head gasket kits are readily available

You will need to get the head faced because they warp, and use a new set of headbolts because they stretch, the timing chain tensioner can't be reused, they are about 30 quid.I thought to advise you of these things Lee so that you can add them to your estimate, good luck with it. GOZZ.

Funny, of all the people on this site, I kinda guessed you would be one of the first to answer When it went, I noticed that the back of the engine was smoking slightly. Never, ever done one before so i ask is it a pretty easy job for a first timer who,s good with his hands. The timing thing would be the thing that would baffle me. Lee

Lee, Hire an engine crane locally for the weekend, use the workshop manual on here for a step by step guide on how to do it It is a lot simpler to unplug and unbolt an engine than swap a head and re-time it Cheers Dave

Agree with Dave2302 - swapping an engine out is not that difficult with a crane or hoist [ Anyone remember those 'Haltrac' Gantry things ? ] and basic hand tools, just tackle everything logically. I've done a fair few over the years and I'm only a DIYer. I recall feeling a great sense of acheivement when I did the first one and proved a few people who told me I couldn't do it wrong.

Yeah but no but you can do that with an automatic? It's only properly locked in 'Park' (by a pin). No ratios can be engaged if there's no oil pressure, and there's no oil pressure because engine isn't running. (?) Even if they could, torque converter will still just slip.

Have seen a head gasket cure called "steel seal" at 29.99 and the write up for it and the satisfied customers are huge. Only one return out of 400. 100% guaranteed. Anyone seen it and what are your thoughts. Lee

I have been on the steel seal website and used their stockist locator. It stated that 2 firms stocked it close to me but when I went to them they had never heard of it let alone stocked it. If they lie about their stockists could they lie about their product?
