Tracing seat belt pre-tensioner fault

We've got a four-flash airbag warning code which indicates a seat-belt pre-tensioner fault. The car is a late R-reg Ultima 24V with side airbags. Is there a quick way to localise this fault or should I borrow a unit from the other car and test by substitution one at a time? Poking around this system with a multimeter is not recommended otherwise I'd compare the readings at the two connectors under the seats. Maybe someone knows of a common problem that triggers this fault code? Lucien

Have you checked the connections under the seat?. They can get disturbed by the feet of rear seat passengers.

Yes, they look OK, no sign of damage to the connectors or wiring loom that I've spotted so far. I wonder whether it's worth just taking the seats out for a closer look? Lucien

Before I start swapping these pyrotechnics, please can anyone confirm whether the fault warning (4 flashes of airbag light) will clear by itself after x drive cycles, or whether it has to be reset manually. As I don't think I have any way of resetting it, that would be a problem as I wouldn't know whether I had swapped out the bad unit. TIA Lucien

Have you tried pulling the under-seat connectors apart and putting them back? Might just be a bad contact.

Yes, done that, nothing unusual found. Perhaps I should do the same at the control box end of the loom. Still not sure whether any other steps are required to clear the fault code - any clues? Lucien

I’ve had a code from a disconnected drivers airbag, I didn’t have to clear it when reconnected, so presumably the same applies to the pre-tensioner.
