Finally got around to checking the brake fluid level today. It was low so I topped it up and the warning light went out. Many thanks for all the replies, I would never have associated the brake fluid with the handbrake. I have made a donation.

Low Brake fluid is usually a sign of badly worn pads or a loss of fluid . I would hope it is the former and they need to be checked.

The care passed its test back in June and there were no problems. I will keep an eye on the break fluid level and check the pads. Thanks again.

Well I was thinking more in terms of looking for signs of a fluid leak around the brake lines and things, including flex hoses, master cylinder etc. OK it passed MOT in June, all that means is it wasn't leaking then. If it is a leak....

Appendix ~ as an aside at one point last year my rear pads got down to the metal (I could hear them scraping) after a long trip, still didn't get a low fluid warning. Think all pads were replaced as all were getting low by that time but can't remember for sure.

While getting a rear CV joint replaced today the mechanic was able to tell me that there was a leak from one of the rear calipers. Now I have to source a rear caliper. Many thanks again.

A-ha! There you go then. The warning system works Ask on Parts Wanted someone might have a working 2nd hand one going spare. Or, is it more likely the brake line / joint? I.e. it only looks like caliper because that's where the fluid is showing.

I understand they can and I think Snoopy has done it. My personal view on the rear calipers is that you'd be better off going for a re-manufactured unit as the hand brake mechanism is prone to wear inside.

It appears that the brake fluid was leaking past the piston. I noticed for some time an unusual occurance in that when I was cornering there was a smell of hot oil. It looks like the brake fluid was leaking onto the disk ind when the brake was applied the fluid got hot. Anybody ever heard of that happening.
